Job Summary:

We are currently hiring for a Senior Counsel for a full-time permanent position supporting our Building Construction group. You will play a critical role in providing legal support to our business groups and divisions, ensuring compliance with laws, and mitigating legal risks. You will be responsible for interpreting legislation, negotiating and drafting construction contracts, subcontracts and related agreements, providing legal advice on various construction-related issues, and managing legal matters across multiple jurisdictions. Your deep experience in construction law and strong corporate/commercial legal skills will be essential in supporting our business objectives and protecting Ledcor's interests.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal advice and support to business leaders on a diverse range of legal issues, with a focus on construction law.
  • Interpret federal and provincial legislation and regulations relevant to our business operations.
  • Draft and negotiate construction/commercial contracts and legal documents, ensuring compliance with Ledcor's Contractual Risk Management Policy.
  • Review RFPs/RFQs and assist team leads with completing responses.
  • Identify and communicate legal issues in complex commercial agreements and provide timely advice and risk mitigation solutions relative to the scope of work.
  • Anticipate business issues, investigate underlying causes and develop and implement practical short and long-term solutions to legal problems.
  • Assist/advise on claims and/or support the transition of claims and litigation matters to in-house litigation counsel or external counsel.
  • Assist with negotiations involving clients, subcontractors, and other third parties, and manage ongoing contract lifecycle.
  • Conduct training sessions for business units to enhance legal awareness and compliance.
  • Interact effectively with regulatory authorities to protect Ledcor's interests.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to legal and contract specialist colleagues.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 8 years of experience as a lawyer in a law firm or corporate legal department, with a concentration in construction law.
  • Bachelor's Degree (Canada) / Juris Doctor in Law.
  • Member in good standing of a provincial law society.
  • Strong corporate/commercial legal skills, including excellent drafting, negotiation, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Sound judgment, strong business acumen, and ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and build relationships at all levels.
  • Demonstrated understanding of industry trends and business goals, with the ability to develop tailored legal strategies.
  • In-depth understanding of key industry trends, market changes, and operational and strategic goals of the business with the ability to anticipate business or regulatory changes and develop legal strategies.
