**Position Summary**
This is a Temporary Part-Time Coordinator, Clinical Educator position with the assignment of Clinical Scholar, within the Emergency Department (ED) and Mental Health Program.
Start date: As soon as possible
End date: Ending on or before March 31, 2025
The Clinical Scholar position is a shared position between the Emergency Department and the Mental Health Program and the successful incumbent is an expert (Nur Guven Ozdemir, 2019) mental health clinician who provides dedicated leadership and mentorship which encompasses their knowledge, skill, and expertise across multiple environments. The Clinical Scholar possesses expertise which has been gained from having held positions in the field of academia as well as various health care settings. An important focus of the Clinical Scholar is on improving, providing and coordinating education supports and access to mental health evidence based knowledge and expertise. In addition, you will develop and maintain key relationships with internal and external stakeholders that will benefit from acute care mental health supports that are recovery focused for individuals experiencing mental illness. This can be done in a variety of settings such as the ED; Mental Health Inpatient, or other units within the hospital. A significant component of the Clinical Scholar is the ability to “effectively manage rapidly changing situations”.
As a Clinical Scholar within the ED and Mental Health Program you will support staff who are providing care to patients experiencing anxiety, mood disorders, psychosis, substance use disorders or personality disorders, and marginalization (in addition to many other mental health diagnoses) while providing high standards of care, which are delivered in a professional and non-stigmatizing manner. The Clinical Scholar is to ensure treatment provided is safe, effective and evidence based and is tailored to the individual needs of the patient and/or family. It is a holistic approach that includes both the biopsychosocial and emotional factors related to what the client is experiencing.
**Department/Unit/Program Description**
The Clinical Scholar Program (CSP) is a program that provides experienced nurses with leadership and mentorship opportunities in a Clinical Scholar role while working in a supernumerary position. The Clinical Scholar will mentor newly graduated nurses, nurse externs, internationally educated nurses (IENs) and nurses seeking to upskill and can support and supervise the new nurses’ transition into the workforce. The Clinical Scholar will work in collaboration with other teams as required supporting the strategic vision and direction of Ross Memorial Hospital.
As a Clinical Scholar you would be responsible for providing hands-on mentorship to the program beneficiaries and to support their nursing practice and integration into the clinical area in accordance with organizational and professional standards, and in collaboration with clinical teams.
**Essential Qualifications**
- Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as an RN with good standing.
- Fifteen years of psychiatric experience combined with teaching within academic settings.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of a client and family centered recovery model in mental illness and substance use/addiction treatment.
- Experience and strong knowledge of seniors wellbeing and mental health, in relation to dementia and delirium.
- Broad knowledge of de-escalation, crisis intervention and counseling skills.
- Broad knowledge of mental health illness, treatment and psychopharmacology (indication and side effects).
- Demonstrated ability to conduct psychiatric assessments.
- Demonstrated ability to provide treatment planning, counseling, crisis intervention, care planning and case coordination.
- Demonstrated skill in CPR techniques.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with clients and their families, colleagues, physicians, and other health care staff, both one-on-one and in groups.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated critical thinking and ability to problem solve.
- Demonstrated ability to provide consultation and leadership.
- Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with conflict situations.
- Must have valid driver’s license.
