Research Assistant, Tests of The Mpmt Led System

Research Assistants are normally students, in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research. Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.

**Position Overview**:
This position is to do the LED characterization for the system that will be in the multi-PMT modules in Hyper-Kamiokande. The characterization needs to be done in water, and so this project involves building a water-tight enclosure with a cut-out from the mPMT cover, an LED unit, and a feedthrough for the DC power cable for the LED pulser board - basically a standalone replica of the LED unit inside the LED-mPMT for testing purposes. For imagining the beam profile of the collimated LED, we would use a diffusive screen and an underwater camera. The unit will be mounted on the 5-axis gantry system for the diffused light source. The dark pool in 0RC039 will be used for this characterization, and if needed time at a local pool could be arranged to make measurements over larger distances.

**Duties**:

- Design of the apparatus to make the measurements of the LED.
- Taking data with cameras, and the LED system for further analysis.
- Analysis of data to develop the profiles of the LED as seen for different incident angles.

**Qualifications**:

- Good analytical skills, particularly with linear algebra.
- A background in Math, Physics, or ACS in third or fourth year university level would be useful with a GPA > 3.9/4.5.
- C++ or python programming experience.
- Operation of robot motors, and programming of.
- Mechanical design experience with some form of 3D modeling software (eg. Autodesk Inventor).
- Ability to lift 30 lb cameras.
- Ability to work in cramped space of 0RC039 lab.
- Ability to climb in and out of a water tank (4' wide x 4' high x 7 ' long).
- Knowledge of water cherenkov detectors would be an asset.
- Knowledge of optics would be an asset.
- Familiar with use of cameras would be an asset.
- Presentation of progress on project at weekly Canadian calibration meetings.

**Condition(s) of Employment**:

- **Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.**

The period of work will be from **January 8, 2024 - May 1, 2024 **and the estimated total hours of work will be **500-560 hours**.
