**Key Objectives**:
- Work within the R&D department to develop and execute projects in metallurgy relating to the production of coring drill bits
- Suggest and test metal powders and melting alloys to create new combinations for pressed and sintered matrices
- Research alternative materials and processes for cutting, gauge protection, abrasion resistance, etc.
- Propose new manufacturing methods and equipment, and when possible, supplement with lab-scale feasibility studies
- Provide assistance to operate and improve the R&D laboratory, its protocols and technical library
- Troubleshoot quality issues and material performance together with Engineering and Quality departments
- Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and technologists to improve current products and develop new ones
**Responsibilities**:
- Work closely with Engineering, Production and Quality departments to achieve project executables
- Report to the Lead Metallurgist for R&D project updates and scheduling
- Assist in the establishment, maintenance and improvement of R&D testing capabilities
- Ensure compliance of health and safety standards within the R&D laboratory
- Maintain a database of developed product feedback and performance
- Coordinate with external materials testing companies, laboratories and vendors on raw material selection and product development
- Take stewardship of procured raw materials, consumables and equipment for development purposes
- Conduct chemical and physical failure analysis investigations
- Conduct feasibility studies on relevant manufacturing processes, such as in forming and thermal treatment
- Prepare necessary internal reports and quotations in accordance with international standards for the purpose of management review
- Suggest in-house testing processes relating to quality control and product performance
- Strive to meet the company’s ever-improving policies and goals
- Participate in other projects as assigned
**Requirements**:
- Engineering degree in materials science (metallurgical), chemical, or mineral processing field
- Knowledge of sieving and blending of metal powders
- Knowledge of sintering furnaces and reducing atmospheres - vacuum processing knowledge/experience would be an asset
- 2+ years of laboratory experience using metallographic and materials testing equipment
- 2+ years of relevant experience in a manufacturing environment
- Manual dexterity to perform intricate tasks, and the physical strength to lift up to 50 lbs
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team
- Good communication skills and good written/oral/presentation skills - technical report writing skill is valued.
