Lawyer, Activist, Union Representative

SEIU Local 2 is firmly committed to intensive field organizing in traditionally hard-to organize private sector industries. As a result, the Local has grown its membership by 500% since its formation 19 years ago. This position is an opportunity to utilize your legal expertise to build a dynamic worker organization that stands up to powerful corporations and mobilizes for political change. The work is diverse and challenging and includes providing legal support to the Justice for Janitors campaign, negotiating collective agreements, and advocating for workers in a variety of sectors.
The SEIU Local 2 Legal Team is a collegial environment which includes monthly team meetings to review case files, share lessons and seek input on difficult files from peers, including our retired President who has over 40 years of labour law experience and has appeared at all levels of court in Canada. As part of the Legal Team, you will coordinate with peers across the country to develop legal strategies, consult on files and work together on professional development.
**Job duties include**:
- Representing the union in matters before the BCLRB.
- Representing union members at grievance arbitrations.
- Negotiating collective agreements.
- Handling worker compensation claims.
- Advising worker leaders and staff on legal matters related to both contract administration and labour law.
**Job Qualifications**:
- Law degree and at least 2 years of post-law school legal experience
- Have a passion for justice and a strong commitment to workers’ rights
- Litigation experience before courts or administrative tribunals would be an asset
- Excellent research and writing skills
- Ability to drive ideas, collaborate and manage initiatives
- A driver’s license and travel required
**Compensation**:
Based on collective agreement and commensurate on experience ($83,127.88 - 124,848.00) Excellent benefit and defined benefit pension plan.
Pay: $80,000.00-$120,000.00 per year
