The Clinical Extern Program Operations Coordinator collaborates with Clinical Managers and other operational and clinical leaders to support the coordination, integration, recruitment, mentorship and onboarding of Clinical Externs. The Coordinator is accountable for the daily oversight of the Extern Program and integration of Clinical Externs to clinical areas across the organization. The Coordinator brings high energy and enthusiasm into this role and promotes clinical excellence in patient and family-centred care and supports Clinical Externs in upholding the organizational Mission, Vision and Values. The Coordinator is committed to continuous improvement and ensuring the Extern Program’s implementation, success and sustainability.

The Coordinator ensures that all operational functions are handled with efficiency, professionalism, and confidentiality. The Coordinator serves as a liaison and conduit between Clinical Managers, Professional Practice Leaders, Clinical Educators and Operational Leads.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Undergraduate degree in BScN required
- Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Extensive clinical experience as a Registered Nurse which would provide proficiency in all aspects of nursing scope of practice, working with unregulated health care workers, effective teaching/learning of adults, and provision of patient care.
- Experience in leadership roles and demonstrated ability to lead teams
- Experience in mentoring and coaching staff and learners
- Experience with onboarding and orientation
- Experience with all aspects of managing human resources
- Ability to effectively introduce and manage change
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and coach. Clinical instructor experience preferred
- Demonstrated time, project management implementation, coordination, evaluation, and organizational skills
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
- Knowledge and experience in clinical operations, performance management, organizational metrics

**RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Collaborates with Clinical Managers and other operational, practice and clinical leaders to support the coordination, integration, recruitment, mentorship, education and onboarding of Clinical Externs
- Accountable for the daily oversight of the Extern Program and integration of Clinical Externs to clinical areas across the organization. Addresses any issues related to the Clinical Extern Program. In collaboration with unit manager, evaluate Clinical Externs’ performance issues in specified domains of practice, interpret performance issues and support remedial plans.
- Assists with data collection, evaluation and reporting required by MOH
- Provides regular updates and reports to the leadership team
- Demonstrates and instructs Clinical Externs in clinical skills within their scope of practice. Support clinical teams in the unit, and help them to understand the scope of practice of Clinical Externs. Maintain regular unit presence to support ongoing education needs and tracking of required skills attainment of Clinical Externs.
- Disseminate information to the unit Manager, and nurses involved in the supervision and training of Clinical Externs. This involves regular program updates by the Clinical Extern Coordinator at staff forums/meetings as needed. Provide support to nurses on the units and answer questions related to scope of practice of clinical externs and clarification of delegation/assignments of tasks.
- Coordinates with Student Placement Coordinator to ensure Clinical Externs function within their student placement as well as their Clinical Extern role on their respective units. In the event of an infectious outbreak (eg. COVID) in the work setting, the Coordinator will liaise with Student Placement Coordinator and the school of nursing as needed to support completion of the student’s clinical placement hours. The Coordinator presents an overview of site administration, organization, policies and procedures, and clinical objectives and expectations to Externs, and supervising staff as necessary.
