**Job Summary**:
The Shelter Support Advisor and Housing Support Advisor role provides direct client support, guidance and mentorship to the occupants of our shelter and transitional housing spaces. The organization values an individual who is reliable, eager to learn, identifies as a “team-player”, can manage under pressure, understands an individual's opinions and perceptions and can navigate conversations with clients, with this in mind. This position is responsible for providing case management under the supervision of the Program Manager, ensuring that services provided are relevant to the needs of the clients in pursuit of a sustainable future. The role provides advocacy, supports life skills development, fosters a positive sense of self, while assisting in goal planning (such as education, health, and employment).

**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Complete intake packages for new clients accessing shelter services
- Coordinate supportive conversations with clients related to goals, challenges and overall wellness
- Providing opportunities for growth and development related to life skills (cooking, cleaning, personal maintenance, etc.)
- Ensuring adherence to “house rules” and coordinating with Program manager related to any issues
- Acting as an advocate for clients in tandem with the leadership team.
- Preparation of meals with/for clients following the house menu
- Assist in fulfilling basic needs for clients such as shelter, food and clothing
- Adherence to documentation policy
- Assist client in accessing appointments and engagements outside of Roots services via transportation
- Supporting clients in planning and implementing desired recreational programming
- Effective use of crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques in relation to client interactions (training can be provided)
- Creating space for impactful conversations with clients related to growth and development, future state planning, and difficult topics

**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER ASSETS**
- Experience in youth work - more specifically in crisis situations
- Keen and motivated to work with the vulnerable population
- Balances work priorities with personal life so that neither is neglected.
- Acts with integrity and empathy related to all operations and interactions
- Ability to participate in team building with colleagues
- Demonstrates a respect for varying backgrounds, perspectives and values social and cultural differences.
- Excellent documentation and reporting abilities
- Support client development in relation to a sustainable, independent and meaningful life via mentorship, guidance and planning
- Coordinating vocational services for clients (resume building, job search, and obtaining associated resources)
- Daily operations of program and site (including household cleaning) as per Program Manager/Supervisor
- Assisting clients to thrive in a shared living environment
- Coordination of daily outings/transportation for clients as per program guidelines
- Enhanced Requirements as follows;
- Driver’s Abstract
- Clear Vulnerable Sector’s Check
- Clear Criminal Record Check
- First Aid/CPR level C
- This position requires the individual to possess a class 5 driver’s license with _
- a minimum of $2 Million Liability insurance. _

**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE**
- Minimum education; Diploma in Human/Social Services or related field. Equivalent education and/or experience may be considered
- Youth work experience of 1-3 years an asset
- Experience working within the human services sector
- Experience working with homeless individuals an asset

**Job Type**: Casual

Pay: $21.50 per hour

Expected hours: 12 - 48 per week
