**Working for the Department/Faculty**

The Indigenous Health Program was founded in 1988 by the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta to encourage a greater number of First Nations, Inuit and Metis students gain access to, and graduate from, all faculty of medicine and dentistry programs. Since the program's inception, the Indigenous Health Program (IHP) has been a leader in the recruitment and retention of Indigenous students, representing Abenaki, Blackfoot, Cree, Dene, Delaware, Inuit, Iroquois, Metis, Mi'kmaq, Mohawk, the Ojibwe communities in Health Sciences in Canada.

**Position Summary**

Reporting to the Executive Director: Indigenous Health, the Indigenous Community Engagement and Recruitment Coordinator (CERC) will advance the core mandate of the University of Alberta and Indigenous Health Program to increase the number of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis students. The CERC will be a key driver in the advancement of this mandate and will pursue outreach and engagement activities with Indigenous students in both rural/on-reserve and urban settings with a key focus on students in Grades 7-12 and at the undergraduate level.

The CERC will work to create meaningful and lasting relationships with Indigenous communities, partners in Indigenous health, and representatives in education and health at the local level. To support this work and advise on these relationships, the CERC will involve the communities in its engagement strategies, inviting youth and participants to in-person or virtual events.

**Duties**
- Plans, coordinates, and implements Indigenous student support initiatives within the Faculty, and at times for the Office of the Vice-Provost, Indigenous Programming and Research that are distinctions-based for the needs of Indigenous students. These are supportive of the University of Alberta’s Indigenous Institutional Strategic Plan.
- Coordinates and administers Indigenous student supports to enrolled and prospective students, such as course registration, graduation processing, petitioning, withdrawals, program documentation, computer accounts, information sessions, receptions, and student orientation.
- Coordinates and liaises with Indigenous cultural supports (i.e., Elders, knowledge keepers, community service providers) to ensure students unique perspectives are supported and strengthened.
- Develops, delivers, and enhances as necessary new and innovative outreach and engagement activities to attract Indigenous students into any of the five Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry programs. This includes existing tactics, including Health Horizons Days, Career Days, Science is Kool Labs, and uSchool.
- Working with the Vice-Provost’s office and other partners, to create and manage a calendar of events that is planned one year in advance.
- Collaborates with Indigenous recruitment coordinator and recruiter to meet strategic goals in Indigenous recruitment from other post-secondary schools.

**Qualifications**
- The ideal candiate is a person who is First Nation, Metis, Inuit, or Non-Status
- Fluency in a tribal language (i.e. Stoney, Dogrib, Cree, Chipewyan, Dene, Inuktitut, Blackfoot, Ojibway, Michif) is an asset
