We are recruiting for a Disability Specialist to manage BWXT Canada's disability-related programs with a focus on disability prevention and health promotion in Cambridge, ON.
**JOB SUMMARY**:
This position reports to the Manager, Human Resources and works closely with the Health & Safety team, Labour Relations, the company Benefits Specialist, company Occupational Health Nurses, company supervisors/managers, employees, union executive, and third party stakeholders.
**RESPONSIBILITIES**:
- Facilitates all aspects of disability management processes including weekly indemnity, short-term disability, long-term disability, worker accommodations, worker compensation accidents or injuries and return to work programs.
- Develops disability-related policies and programs independently and, at times, in conjunction with outside consultants.
- Provides coaching and consultation to managers, employees, union and third-party stakeholders.
- Supports employees through all stages of occupational and non-occupational illness and injury ensuring that relevant and appropriate medical documentation is collected.
- Facilitates employee reintegration to the workplace and collaborates with appropriate third parties and internal partners through planning, implementation, removing barriers and coordinating timely modified work programs.
- Liaise with other health care professionals, third party consultants, disability insurance carriers and the WSIB.
- Acts as the in-house WSIB expert.
- Ensures timely completion of required documentation for WSIB, LTD and private insurances.
- Oversees the incidental and short-term sick leaves and maintains appropriate contact with staff on leave.
- Manages occupational health vendor and medical surveillance.
- In conjunction with occupational health, promotes employee wellness by conducting on-site health promotion programs to help reduce costs associated with chronic illnesses such as, but not limited to, depression, diabetes and high blood pressure.
- Ensures protection of confidential and sensitive employee information.
- Collaborates with managers regarding disability management and absence prevention.
- Works closely with Labour Relations in relation to attendance management by meeting with employees, reporting of innocent and culpable absenteeism and monitoring the effectiveness and identifying trends.
- Manages third party vendor providing ad hoc Occupational Health (RN) services such as hearing conservation and fit testing medical questionnaires.
- Provides backup treatment/First Aid for work and non-work related injuries and illnesses.
- Assists with ergonomic requirements for staff which includes arranging assessments as required.
- Maintains the BWXT WSIB Safety Group program.
- Assists with special projects as required.
**QUALIFICATIONS**:
- University Degree in a related field such as Nursing, Human Resources, Rehabilitation Counselling, Health Sciences or Social Sciences.
- Disability management certification.
- Occupational Health Nurse (OHN) designation is an asset.
- 5 years of progressive experience in a related field such as disability/WSIB management, health & safety, human resources or occupational health, including experience with complex claims management, preferably in a unionized setting.
- Experience with workplace health programs is preferred as well as a working knowledge of external insurance providers.
- Thorough working knowledge of, and understanding of, related legislation and regulations, including Workers' Compensation Act, Human Rights Legislation, and AODA.
- Effective case management skills.
- Trained First Aider.
- Ability to respond in a timely manner and prioritize a timely response to situations that are urgent or require immediate attention.
- Ability to mediate conflicts and exert positive influence over others.
- A level of assertiveness is required when working with third party stakeholders (insurance company, etc.) to ensure acceptable customer service levels are maintained for both the company and employees.
- Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
- Attention to detail, excellent organizational, analytical and problem solving skills.
- Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team, as well as independently with mínimal supervision.
- Ability to prioritize and meet tight deadlines, and effectively manage internal/external relations.
