**Job Title: Laboratory Supervisor**

**Reports to: Laboratory Manager**

**Department: Food Residue**

**Location: Burnaby. B.C.**

**Full-Time**

**Basic Purpose**:
This position is responsible for the full supervisory and related administrative responsibilities for the operation of the assigned group within the Food LOB.

**Key Accountability/Responsibilities**:

- Maximize human, equipment and financial resources and ensures that they are used appropriately
- Organize and direct staff and workflow within the group(s) to ensure samples are processed and reported according to due dates and client needs
- Assist analysts, technicians and other members of management; provide support as necessary
- Monitor workload and shift activities to meet test deadlines and lab operations requirements
- Ensure level of staff training is adequate in order to provide coverage and contingency plans during staff illness and vacation
- Develop and revise relevant SOP’s, WI’s and FCD’s
- Coordinate requests or recommend resource planning e.g. need for additional staff or equipment
- Elevate significant & complex resource issues to Manager
- Manage method development/validation and other projects to ensure timely completion
- Ensure compliance with Quality System and external accreditation requirements, SOP’s and WI’s within area(s) of responsibility
- Participate in and provide support during internal and external audits
- Initiate Non Systemic Corrective Action Reports and Corrective Action Reports; investigate and resolve based on root cause analysis
- Ensure section performance charts are monitored for failures to meet tolerances and institute remedial action immediately
- Initiate and complete annual review of control charts and method limits, including periodic review of control charts throughout the year
- Participate in department health and safety objectives; where required, investigate and implement all resulting corrective actions
- Streamline LOB processes and procedures, ensure consistency and maximize efficiencies while maintaining a focus on quality, innovation and continuous improvement
- Lead and develop staff - including responsibility for recruitment/onboarding of new employees, setting objectives, evaluating performance & expectations, coaching and mentoring, working jointly with employees in the development of their career path, ensuring that adequate training is provided
- Complete training documentation in timely manner and ensure training records are maintained for staff
- Handle performance, attendance management and progressive discipline (with input from management and HR)
- Develop and maintain a positive work environment for employees
- Adhere to Bureau Veritas Code of Ethics Policy
- Support and comply with all Bureau Veritas policies, Quality System and Health & Safety program
- Participate, when requested in lab and health and safety meetings
- Participate, when requested in internal and external audits
- Keep work area clean, neat and organized
- Provide general lab support
- Maintain training records and relevant qualifications
- All other responsibilities as assigned

**Skills and Knowledge**:

- B.Sc. in a chemical science or the equivalent
- 3 years of experience in specific environment of which 2 are at a leadership level
- Ability to deal with different situations and personalities
- Excellent communication skills - both written and verbal
- Able to assess problems and recommend solutions
- Positive outlook with a ability to work in a fast paced environment
- Good time-management, organizational, communication and priority setting skills
- Ability to adapt to a changing environment
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Detail oriented & good record keeping skills
- Ability to accurately follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and instructions
- Ability to learn quickly
- Excellent up to date knowledge of laboratory process and automation
- Good team building, training, and coaching skills
- Good interpersonal skills
- Excellent computer skills

**Working Conditions**:

- High level of work production in fast paced lab environment
- The job requires flexible working hours and potential for overtime work
- Some lifting and carrying and may involve long periods of standing
- Hazardous materials are handled using established safety procedures and appropriate equipment
