Reporting to the Manager of the Epidemiology and Data Analytics Unit, the Epidemiologist provides epidemiological expertise and support to programs Toronto Public Health, including advice and support related to the collection, analysis, interpretation and reporting of surveillance data, for assessing community health status and communicable disease control and prevention. Acts as a consultant on epidemiological, statistical, and evaluative methods.
- Initiates, plans, designs, organizes, coordinates, implements and evaluates epidemiological research on the health status factors that affect the health of the population in the City of Toronto and the need for and delivery of public health services
- Develops and analyzes epidemiological and other related indicators and research strategies
- Prepares and delivers presentations on health status and epidemiological issues for staff, the public, external agencies and community organizations as required
- Facilitates the use of epidemiological evidence by providing and integrating community health status information in program and service planning, monitoring and evaluation
- Identifies emerging issues and trends related to community health status and proposes appropriate responses
- Applies quality assurance methods for epidemiological analysis and reports
- Prepares reports for the Board of Health, City Council and its Committees, and external organizations for the signature of the Medical Officer of Health or other management staff as directed
- Chairs or participates as a member of internal work groups and committees and represents the Medical Officer of Health on external work groups and committees
- Liaises with provincial ministries, health units, research and information organizations, other city departments, external agencies and partners to provide access to current epidemiology and community health status knowledge and for collaborative epidemiological research
- Provides consultation, training and support to Toronto Public Health and other city staff on community health status information, epidemiological, statistical, survey and evaluative methods
- Responds to requests for community health status information from staff, the public, external agencies and community organizations, and the media as directed

Key Qualifications:

- Master's Degree in Epidemiology or related discipline or the approved equivalent combination of education and related extensive experience.
- Considerable experience using statistical software such as, SAS, SPSS, STATA, R or other software packages and programming languages currently used to collect, analyze and report epidemiological data in Ontario.
- Considerable experience in a public health or related agency. Working on current population health issues to Toronto, including the social determinants of health and health inequalities is an asset.
- Experience working with standard Ontario population health data (e.g. IntelliHealth, BORN Ontario, EDI, ACES, OHIP, iPHIS, CCM, and Census) and indicators used for surveillance and population health assessment, preferably in a public health agency or related setting.
- Experience using data visualization tools e.g., Tableau, is an asset.

You must also have:

- Knowledge and skills in epidemiological and statistical methods, data analysis and interpretation, applied research, conducting literature reviews and current related best practices.
- Excellent organizational and project management skills with the ability to meet competing priorities.
- Ability to take initiative, communicate effectively, to prepare written reports, and make oral presentations.
- Ability to work effectively with staff and to utilize positive problem solving solutions, including negotiation and motivation.
- Ability to work in a high pressure environment and respond to competing priorities.
- Ability to work flexible hours (i.e. occasional evenings and weekends) when necessary.
