At the Upstream Lab, our research is driven by the desire to promote health equity and address social determinants of health. Our research focus is broken down into four streams: 1) Integrating health and social care by addressing social needs of individuals in the healthcare settings; 2) population health management; 3) data to enable proactive care and 4) conducting trials.

**Duties/Responsibilities**:

- Participates in the design and management of surveillance systems for acute respiratory infectious diseases
- Build and maintain an automated respiratory surveillance system using primary care electronic medical record (EMR) data.
- Develop and test phenotype algorithms using EMR data to classify patients with acute respiratory infections.
- Applies statistical and analytical methods to identify patterns, trends, and risk factors associated with disease occurrence and transmission.
- Participates in disease outbreak investigations, including collecting data from local and national sites
- Collect, manage, and analyze epidemiological data from various sources, including surveillance systems and clinical studies.
- Produces routine statistical summary reports and special reports as needed and contribute to the preparation of manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals
- Disseminates results of investigations, special studies, routine surveillance, and analyses of health outcome data
- Coordinates and participates in epidemiological/evaluative projects, including the organizational/administrative aspects, i.e., preparing agendas, maintaining minutes and preparing reports.
- Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams, including principal investigator, biostatisticians, clinicians, and public health professionals, to develop research protocols, study designs, and data collection instruments
- Stay abreast of current literature, methodologies, and advancements in the field of epidemiology to inform research activities and contribute to evidence-based practice.
- Perform literature searches, reviews and analyzes provincial, national and global epidemiology for trends, determinants and emerging trends in acute respiratory infections; identifies possible future public health issues arising from the data.
- Highlights, interprets and summarizes observations and makes recommendations to the PI, internal therapeutics committee or other stakeholders.
- Prepares data analysis and reports as required for performance measures.
- Assists in the preparation of selected specialized review papers and articles and in the design and implementation of branch initiatives related to research and evaluation of relevant programs.
- Prepares briefing notes and documents in consultation with other unit consultants, including RFPs, reports, correspondence, responses to reports, requests for information, supporting documentation for budget submissions.
- Provide educational sessions/ guidance/ materials as required.
- Coordinates and facilitates meetings on relevant program development, implementation and evaluation.
- Review and analyze provincial, national and global epidemiology for trends, determinants and emerging issues concerning immunization programs.
- Performs other work related duties as assigned and/or requested

**Knowledge/Skill**:

- Principles of epidemiology, biostatistics including surveillance, epidemiological research methodology, and statistical analysis techniques in order to analyze and assess scientific literature.
- Communicable/vaccine preventable disease epidemiology
- Written communication to produce knowledge management products and reports, compile and analyze complex scientific data, prepare briefing notes, letters and position papers and to draft materials for internal and external publications.
- Oral communication and presentation to liaise and collaborate with branch staff and management and present material on behalf of the ministry.
- Consultation skills to provide epidemiological services and advice to staff, PI(s) and stakeholders

**Qualifications**:

- PhD in epidemiology, biostatistics, or related field required.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in epidemiological research
- Proficiency in statistical software packages (e.g., R, SAS, Stata) and data management systems.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences.
- Experience working on multidisciplinary teams and collaborating with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
- Demonstrated commitment to public health principles, ethical research practices, and health equity.
