**Job Overview**

The B.C. Wildlife Federation is looking for a Beaver Restoration Assistant to work under the guidance of the Beaver Restoration Project Lead. They will assist with the 10,000 Wetlands Project, which aims to install 100 beaver dam analogues (BDAs) in BC to restore wetland and stream habitats. They will assist with ongoing work associated with field assessments, installation of BDAs, and effectiveness monitoring of BDAs. This opportunity provides hands-on experience for individuals who are interested in a career in ecology and/or conservation. In this position, you will have the unique opportunity to get involved in rewarding conservation and stewardship work throughout B.C.

Extensive travel within BC will be required, with up to 10 to 12 days away at a time. Accommodations will include camping and motels. Field work can be remote, occur in difficult terrain and in all weather conditions. Applicants should be capable of and prepared to work on their feet, regularly carry loads up to 22kg (50lbs), and to work with power tools and machinery on a regular basis. **Key Tasks of this Positions will Include**:

- Liaison with partner organizations and First Nations.
- Construct low-tech process-based restoration structures including Beaver Dam Analogues (BDAs) and Post-Assisted Log Structures (PALS) using locally sourced vegetation and other materials with a field crew.
- Operate handheld machinery, such as hydraulic post-pounders and chainsaws (training will be provided).
- Conduct field visits of stream and wetland areas to assess suitability for beaver restoration work. Assessments include basic vegetation, hydrology, and wildlife surveys.
- Use 360 cameras, drones and ArcGIS field apps to collect and maintain data
- Assist with the installation, maintenance and collection of data using monitoring equipment including but not limited to level loggers, flow meters, and water quality meters.
- Assist with the management and analysis of field data and preparing data summary reports and maps.
- Assist with invasive plant management and native vegetation planting.
- Coordinate procurement of necessary field equipment and materials, maintain all equipment as required and update inventory records.
- Assist with drafting contracts for contractors.
- Assist with outreach and training events, including Indigenous community workshops, field demonstrations, and public training events.
- Adhere to safety requirements and protocols in the field
- Prepare technical reports and support headquarters team with annual reports and grant documents
- Respectfully interact with members of the public, private landowners, partnering organizations and members of participating First Nations.
- Perform other duties as directed by the Beaver Restoration Project Lead and Director of Conservation Stewardship.

**Requirements**:

- Must be 15-30 years of age _(Due to grant funding requirements - Canada Jobs)_
- Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Act; and have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment, and be eligible to work in B.C.
- Class 5 driver’s license

**Education**:

- Must be pursuing, or have obtained, a diploma or degree in a relevant field (e.g., Environmental Sciences, Geography, Biology, Education, Communications, etc.)
