Cranbrook, Canada The Nature Trust of BC Full time

The Nature Trust of British Columbia is a leading non-profit land conservation organization dedicated to protecting critical habitat for wildlife, fish, and plants in BC. Since 1971, we have secured 180,000 acres of ecologically significant land. In order to help care for the land, NTBC and our partners fund an annual conservation field crew program that carries out land management activities on conservation properties throughout the province, including the Kootenay region.

The Nature Trust of British Columbia (NTBC) is looking for a Crew Member who will assist in a variety of land management activities on over 20 conservation property complexes within the Kootenay region. You will work on both NTBC and BC Provincial conservation properties to help achieve shared conservation objectives. You will report to the Kootenay Conservation Crew Supervisor, and work as a coordinated team to complete the annual work plan.

This is a full-time contract position based in Cranbrook, B.C. The Crew Member will report directly to the Crew Supervisor.

**Responsibilities**:

- Property inspections on conservation lands that may include wildlife and habitat inventory, GPS and mapping functions (e.g. ArcGIS Field Maps), reporting of land management issues and/or illegal activities, and inventory of signage and other property infrastructure.
- Replacement/repair of signage and infrastructure.
- Removal of invasive plants and replanting of native vegetation.
- Litter/trash clean up and removal.
- Contribute to environmental assessments and monitoring of the ecological condition of properties.
- Assessment and repair of boundary fence lines to help eliminate trespass by domestic livestock and motorized vehicles.
- Assist in the coordination and implementation of volunteer work events on conservation properties, as necessary.
- Work on specific projects requiring additional support (i.e. wetland enhancement, wildlife tree monitoring, access management initiatives, soil collection/analysis, etc.)
- Represent and promote NTBC and land conservation efforts in a respectful and professional manner.

Skills, Abilities, and Qualifications
- Education (enrolled or recent graduate) relevant to the environmental sector (environmental studies, biology, forestry, ecological restoration, resource management, etc.).
- Related paid or volunteer experience working outdoors in the environmental field.
- Knowledge and passion for the natural environment in BC.
- Self-motivated, with a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn.
- Physical fitness to handle an active summer of work on your feet, in variable weather conditions with some heavy lifting.
- Ability to work cooperatively and effectively in a team-based work environment.
- Willingness to occasionally work remotely for several days at a time, which may include front-country/back-country camping.
- Comfortable with various hand and power tools, operating a pickup truck and off-road vehicles.
- Possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License (or equivalent) and willing to submit a driver’s abstract.
- Must be legally allowed to work in Canada.

Work Term, Location and Hours:

- Work Term: May 1st until September 1st, 2023 (with possibility of extension).
- 36hrs/week, 9 hour days (Monday-Thursday).
- The position will be based out of The Nature Trust of BC’s Cranbrook office, located at the BC Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development building.

What we offer

$20-22 per hour (dependent on experience), plus 4% vacation pay.

Please submit your résumé and cover letter by 4:30pm (MDT) March 17, 2023 to Joe Strong, the Kootenay Conservation Land Coordinator. In your letter, please address how you meet the qualifications identified above and your salary expectations.

Thank you for your interest. Only those short listed for the position will be contacted.
- The Nature Trust of BC is thankful for the financial support of the 2023-24 NTBC Conservation Field Crew program from The Nature Smart Climate Solutions Fund, The Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation, The Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program, and Wheaton Precious Metals._
