Saanichton, Canada Tsawout First Nation Full time

The Fisheries Summer Intern will assist the Fisheries Program with all aspects of aboriginal fisheries, fish and fish habitat restoration and enhancement, as well as working towards increased community participation in fishery-related activities. The Fisheries Summer Intern will participate in all activities carried out by the Tsawout fisheries department, as directed.

**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Works collaboratively with other First Nations Fisheries staff and other partner agencies (e.g. DFO, Parks Canada) to conduct field work and collect samples and data. Training will be provided as needed.
- Assists the Fisheries staff in day-to-day activities to deliver food fish to the Tsawout community, maintain equipment in working order;
- Attends departmental and staff meetings and events as required;
- Presents a professional, positive and helpful attitude at all times;
- Adheres to departmental policies and procedures, and all other policies, bylaws and laws adopted by Council as well as legislated policies;
- Maintains strict confidentiality and exercises sound judgment and discretion when dealing with sensitive issues;
- Promotes a safe workplace; follows all established safety procedures;
- Carries out other duties as directed.

**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE**
- Grade 12 graduation (Dogwood or BC Adult Graduation Diploma) preferred;
- Indigenous ancestry, an asset;
- Experience working with a First Nation organization, an asset;
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license and reliable vehicle plus a clean driver’s abstract is required and appropriate insurance;
- Clean criminal record check required.

**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES**
- Advanced computer skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint);
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills including the ability to provide, obtain or follow clear, concise and accurate information orally and in writing (including spelling, grammar, context and structure);
- Ability to perform fieldwork under strenuous conditions during all weather conditions; and
- Ability to work early morning, late night hours and weekends, as needed;
- Ability to establish and maintain respectful, cooperative and productive working relationships with a variety of individuals to complete work assignments;
- Ability to work independently following directions, act on own initiative;
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and to exercise discretion when dealing with sensitive issues;
- Ability to effectively communicate and respond to routine requests or inquiries from TFN staff, members and stakeholders;
- Strong work ethic including the ability to take initiative, attend work on a regular basis, and to demonstrate a collaborative approach to problem solving.

**WORKING CONDITIONS**

**Physical Demands**
- Extended periods of extensive fieldwork;
- Lifting (approximately 50 lbs);
- Bending or stooping;
- Work in inclement weather conditions;
- Flexibility in scheduling which includes late nights and weekends;
- Potential for conflict from employees, the public or Nation members;
- May be required to attend meetings and community events outside of normal office hours and may be required to travel out of town to attend activities such as meetings, conferences, or workshops.

**Tools/Equipment**
- Office tools and equipment such as computers, laptops, scanners, photocopiers, calculators, fax machines, telephone system, and sets-up audio-visual equipment for presentations;
- Join operations using various types of fishing gear, aquatic equipment, safety and navigation aids such as marine radio, GPS, sonar, radar and navigation chart software and the fisheries department vehicles;
- Communication devices including two-way radio.
