**What can I expect to do in this role?**: The Mechanical Technician position plays a crucial role in supporting the work of designing, building, fabricating, and maintaining exhibitions for OSC collections and exhibit halls. This position is supervised by the Mechanical Technician, Group Leader and reports to the Manager of Fabrication. The role calls for a highly skilled individual to build, assemble, maintain, develop, and prototype various exhibits, mechanical devices, machined components, and mechanisms. You will have the opportunity to utilize your fabrication skills to the fullest in our machine and welding shop, collaborating with various teams including fabricators, designers, program specialists, scientists, and other staff, as well as clients and contracted contributors.
**How do I qualify?**:
**Mandatory**:
- Certified journeyperson metal worker with knowledge of related trades - sheet metal, machinist, welder, fitter
**Technical Knowledge and Experience**:
- Expertise in interpreting and understanding blueprints, shop drawings, design sketches and CAD/CAM drawing to produce accurate parts.
- Thorough understanding of standard metalworking trade practices, local/provincial regulations, and generally accepted standards and codes.
- Experience with welding, brazing, sheet metal work, robotics, hydraulics and pneumatics to develop, prototype, build, and assemble to produce unique metal structures, mechanical devices, and machined parts.
- Demonstrates understanding of exhibition take-down and set-up practices, including the use of regulated equipment such as single/double person lifts, boom lifts and fork trucks, working at heights protocols, and able to construct using basic hand tools.
- Knowledge and understanding of associated trades and production methodologies in a manufacturing process.
**Prototyping and Problem-Solving Skills**:
- Strong conceptual and mathematical skills for precision in measurements for creating layouts and material estimates.
- Ability to determine appropriate manufacturing methods and the correct order of operations to complete tasks.
- Ability to keep work areas clean, safe, and secure for staff and the public.
- Displays diligence in equipment maintenance including tools, and gear used by Fabrication staff.
- Demonstrates understanding of Ontario Health and Safety standards for practicing safe operations when using equipment, tools, and machinery.
**Communication and Interpersonal Skills**:
- Able to work independently or on multi-disciplinary teams, working closely with other areas within the Learning and Engagement branch.
- Excellent communication skills to effectively explain technical issues relating to construction problems, production techniques and material properties, providing sound recommendations to designers, teams and managers.
- Ability to liaise with suppliers and tactfully respond to clients and other staff.
- Lead and contribute to team meetings to recommend solutions to problems, and support productivity.
