Family Support Worker

**The Position**
Reporting to the Social Development Manager, the Family Support Worker (FSW) will assist and support parents in their role as caregivers, with the goal of promoting parental competency and strengthening family life, leading to healthy child and family development. This position will support families with self-advocacy skills, involving them in speaking out for themselves about the things that are important to them. You may also engage with extended family and community volunteers to help support families.
- Must be a shishalh Nation member, current employee or shishalh community member.
- Connect with parents and families and assist them in accessing programs and services that may be useful to the child, youth and/or family; this includes making formal, verbal, or informal referrals to appropriate service providers or agencies.
- Work with the Strengthening Families Worker and MCFD on matters related to child safety and short/long-term care planning for shishalh Nation children.
- Gain and sustain the participation of families in the program by providing flexible support and establishing a good rapport with all community members and families.
- Assist caregivers in developing plans, identifying strategies or techniques for managing challenging behaviours, and collaborating with other supports.
- Work with families to accomplish goals as identified with family and professionals.
- Engage and motivate families to be accountable to themselves and their family members.
- Promote and support cultural teachings and practices for our families and community.
- Support skill development such as positive parenting, household management, grocery shopping and food preparation, and other practical skills.
- Perform other duties within the scope of the position, as assigned.
**Qualifications, Skills and Abilities**:
- A post-secondary diploma or employer-approved alternative or an acceptable combination of education, training, and/or experience.
- Family Support Certificate. Home Visitor Training.
- 2 years of work experience with children, youth or families, preferably within a First Nations environment.
- Proficient in the use of MS Office.
- Capacity to establish effective relationships with children/ youth/ families and extended families.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and proficiently both verbally and in writing.
- Respect for, sensitivity towards, knowledge, and understanding of shishalh culture and traditions.
- Current BC Driver’s License and access to a personal vehicle.
- Acceptable Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search. Up-to-date vaccinations.
