Job Summary

This position is responsible for the leadership and alignment of UBCO Heat student athlete services and varsity high performance sport operations within the mission, vision and values of UBCO Heat Athletics. This position is a collaborator and facilitator who can lead a sustainable high performance model that is student athlete-centred, coach driven, and administration and sport science supported.

This position includes varsity sport program management and supporting student athletes and coaches with an integrated support team to create a high performance environment that delivers academic and athletic success, overall wellbeing and effective operations supporting student-athletes.

Organizational Status

This position reports directly to the Director of Athletics and Recreation, interacts frequently with Athletics & Recreation full and part time staff, and collaborates with other University units and external organizations as required.

The position is responsible for the leadership of two full-time staff (Heat Athletic Therapist and Student Athlete Success & Compliance Coordinator) in addition to six Heat interuniversity sport head coaches across both genders (basketball, soccer, volleyball).

Work Performed

High Performance Sport Program Management and Operations
- Takes leadership responsibility for the coaches of the UBCO Heat varsity teams, with an emphasis on the Canada West “Team Sports” of basketball, soccer, and volleyball while still supporting and incorporating the “Championship Sports” of cross-country running / track and golf and the “Competitive Sport Club Sports” of women’s softball and men’s rugby.
- Acts as the primary and coordinating point of contact for the varsity teams across the areas of competitive success and competitive supports and responsible for the appropriate delegation and oversight of such.
- Oversees the respective policies and procedures of varsity athletics.
- Facilitates the planning and operations functions for varsity teams, supporting coaches with competition scheduling, travel, assistant coach hiring, compliance, eligibility, athletic awards and supporting overall progress and reporting against sport plans.
- Has overall responsibility for scheduling of interuniversity sport competitions and events, including conference and playoff competition.
- Has overall responsibility for scheduling of practice and training times.
- Ensures regulatory compliance for all conference affiliations and sport governing bodies in which Varsity Sport competes, including but not limited to USPORTS and Canada West.
- Contributes to building relationships with team specific donors, alumni and sponsors.
- Supports the Director of Athletics and Recreation with Varsity Sport Program Management of the Canada West “Championship Team” sports of golf and cross-country / track & field.
- Oversees and collaborates with other staff members in support of the Competitive Sport Clubs.
- Develops, progresses in alignment, and reports against the UBC Student Strategic Plan and the UBCO Heat Athletics Mission, Vision and Values.

High Performance Student-Athlete Services and Operations
- Takes leadership responsibility for the overall student-athlete experience of UBCO Heat varsity teams in collaboration with the Head Coaches
