**DESCRIPTION**

This role is accountable to the standards of their respective Regulatory College(s) for their professional discipline(s) and oversees operational management of the disciplines’ service delivery, any specialty equipment associated or used by their discipline(s), the management of resources (funds and human resources), and the provision of clinical oversight of specialized operations.

This role spans organizational, pan-program and within discipline levels.

This role leads projects improving indicators for clinician specific outcomes and reports to the Director of Professional Practice. This employee must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for actively promoting and supporting patient and family centered engagement and care. This role is accountable for the management and/or mentoring of corporate wide staff resources who may report to the professional practice department. This role is accountable for liaising with various programs and departments within KHSC and our partner organizations to ensure best patient outcomes.

The Professional Practice Leader will oversee staff supervision, documentation, and counseling if required, of personnel actions including conflict resolution, and performance assessment. This role will also work in collaboration with the People Service Centre to monitor staffing requirements and develop remedial plans to support patient care needs.

**PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITES & DUTIES**:
**Human Resource Management**:

- Provides operational leadership to direct reports; combination of regulated and non-regulated health care professionals for Respiratory Therapy and Anesthesia Assistants. As part of this responsibility the PPL assumes day to day responsibility for ensuring appropriate balance of skills and capabilities of staff; quality assurance; prioritizing workloads and schedules; managing training and development needs; conducts biannual performance development plans and performance improvement plans as required; participates in workforce planning and recruitment; addresses labour and union related issues and performance management as required; contributes to budgeting, financial reporting, benchmarking and operational efficiency planning; oversees direct reports’ compliance with all statutory and regulatory requirements, professional and service quality standards, organizational policies and health and safety standards and protocols for professions.

**Supply Management**:

- Utilize clinical expertise in management of specialized products, equipment, and medical gases for use throughout KHSC. As part of this role, collaborates with 3SO and programs regarding supply contract review and renewal; updates order sets based on product changes; works with Finance to ensure appropriate cost recovery, purchase order information, financial reporting and budgeting; collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to forecast supply needs, inventory, ordering and distribution throughout KHSC; contract pricing; coordinates and implements operational efficiencies; collaborates with infection control related to products, equipment and medical gas IPAC considerations.

**Respiratory Therapy Expert**:
**Professional Practice Resource**:

- Advances the profession by supporting and advising respiratory therapy professionals at KHSC. Act as a professional practice consultant to program leadership and corporate support resources (e.g. People Services, Finance, PQSR, etc.). Supports clinical staff professional development; provides guidance and recommendations regarding highly complex patient care scenarios, which arise in a regional, tertiary care environment, to facilitate transitions to other health care agencies, maintain patient flow, improve outcomes, and reduce risk to the organization. Actively pursuing development of clinical care approaches, pathways, and enhancing interprofessional approach to patient and family-centred care delivery. Investigates and/or contributes to resolution of relevant SAFE reports and patient complaints

**Education and Research**:

- Coordinates and supports clinical staff education via monthly education meetings, lunch and learns, workshops, webinars, conference, etc. Actively participates or leads research related to the profession and/or respiratory therapy. Encourages and supports staff to participate in research within their areas of practice. Submits letters of intent, research proposals and ethics proposals to advance the body of knowledge surrounding nutrition problems and/or practice related questions relevant to our environment.
