About the Common Law Section of the Faculty of Law

Over the past 20 years, the Common Law Section of the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa has become a national and global leader in many fields. We are the only law school to offer a common law degree in both English and French, and our faculty is one of the most accomplished in the country. **Position Purpose**:
Manages the Career and Professional Development Centre ensuring student services, programming, career counselling, recruiting initiatives and projects are delivered. Manages all law student placements for both traditional and non-traditional articling placements.

**In this role, your responsibilities will include**:

- Collaborates with and supports the Assistant Dean in the strategic direction and meeting the strategic goals of the Centre.
- Leads the daily operations of the Centre regarding staff and resources allocated to achieve the service offering in counselling, campus recruiting initiatives, weekly programming and events and all other activities related to the smooth running of the Centre’s operations.
- Manages the delivery of career and education counselling and employment guidance to all J.D., LL.M and PhD. (undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students
- Ensures expert academic advice are in phase with students’ long-term career goals, programs and concentrations, international exchanges and with employers’ requirements for student and recent graduates.
- Leads the conceptualization, development, planning and implementation of the Centre’s annual recruiting/placement event calendar and programming of major high-profile on campus recruiting initiatives (i.e. on-campus interview processes, employer receptions, employer roundtables, mock interview events and career days) while ensuring students are well equipped with the proper skills for their professional articling opportunities to carry out successful job searches.

**What you will bring**:

- LL.B. or J.D. degree, or an M.Ed in counselling and 5 or more years in a legal or law-related environment required; membership in a Provincial Bar Association is considered an asset.
- Excellent knowledge of legal career job market and diversity of legal career options and knowledge of recruitment and related ethical principals
- Excellent knowledge of legal career job market and diversity of legal career options, and knowledge of recruitment and related ethical principles.
- Excellent knowledge of particular regulatory requirements of bar associations and law societies both nationally and internationally.
- Experience in supervising employees and project management
- Experience in public relations and in networking and relationship building
- Experience in career counselling and professional development counselling
- Knowledge of access and equity principles
- Experience in designing, preparing and making public presentations as well as experience in administrative writing and reviewing.
- Experience in working effectively in a demanding, client-oriented environment and strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to complete work that requires strict attention to detail in an environment of constant interruptions
- Demonstrated excellence in organizational and time management skills, ability to multitask, to work under pressure and to meet firm deadlines
- Experience in using computer systems and software and databases
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Bilingualism (spoken and written).
- Ability and availability to travel and work outside of normal office hours to facilitate professional developmen
