Spark: a centre for social research innovation within McMaster University’s Faculty of Social Sciences is hiring in the Applied Research Apprenticeship (Research Assistant III) for graduate students in the social sciences to join the Brighter Spark Applied Research Team.

The Brighter Spark Applied Research team brings the best of practical applied social science research to those seeking to create a brighter world. As an applied research, evaluation, and organizational change team, Brighter Spark provides robust research that is directly actionable in helping organizations continuously grow their impact.

Research data management (RDM) is becoming a requirement for all federal grant programs and Spark is creating a series of short, instructional videos that are going to serve as a fundamental resource for the research community the world over. We want to do that by capturing researchers learning, implementing best practices, and giving their feedback about research data management in real time - these students and faculty members will receive the distinction of becoming our Data Champions.

As Spark’s multimedia specialist you will be assisting and setting up researchers/students to use various forms of media to capture their research processes. You will need to know how to use various tools of trade, including video editing software, graphic design and web development tools.

**Job Summary**:
Responsible for providing multimedia services and support to the University. Role will coordinate, develop, and implement an array of multimedia projects such as video, digital graphics, and other content for the web and social media platforms.

**Accountabilities**:

- Evaluate and recommend new technologies and emerging trends.
- Provide complete production services including consultation, planning, and production of multimedia materials in support of education initiatives.
- Consult with clients regarding all phases of multimedia projects.
- Develop concepts and creative designs for multimedia projects.
- Research, troubleshoot and resolve technical issues.
- Document project requirements and provide assistance and demonstrate expertise in finalizing needs specifications.
- Utilize various software including, but not limited to, Adobe Creative suite and other multimedia editing and animation tools.
- Provide design advice, production options, and recommendations on the development and delivery of multimedia for programs to clients including, but not limited to, scripts, graphics, music, and locations for shooting videos.
- Create, gather, and maintain graphics, illustrations, font folios, photo images, logos, and other materials in a database for archive and use.
- Identify and implement opportunities to promote activities through new web design initiatives.
- Implement video streaming capabilities using video channels and hosts.
- Edit raw multimedia, select music, design digital multimedia effects, and develop graphics in order to create a finished software program using non-linear editing systems and equipment.
- Make recommendations for the purchase of new equipment.
- Ensure the maintenance and security of equipment.
- Ensure the accuracy of billing and invoicing for the department.
- Store and safeguard confidential multimedia projects.
- Compile statistical data, prepare reports, and maintain logs and files.
- Determine final multimedia formats as it pertains to disc space, multimedia quality, and compression ratios for copying purposes.
- Provide multimedia format conversion and duplication services to clients.
- Plan and coordinate a variety of events and activities.
- Write a variety of documents, including, but not limited to, social media content, reports, and general correspondence.
- Provide estimates of time and resources needed, including determining staff resources to complete projects and calculating estimated billable hours required.
- Ensure multimedia shoots run smoothly and locations have been set-up for optimal multimedia recording including lighting and sound.
- Monitor and adjust equipment during recording and taping sessions.
- Schedule equipment use, manage media inventory, and maintain required supplies.
- Handle time sensitive requests, prioritize projects and ensure that requests can be completed.
