Developmental Services and Employment Worker - Full Time Permanent

**Position Description**:Fort William First Nation is looking for an individual who is motivated, caring and

enthusiastic about helping others, the Employment and Developmental Services Worker is partially

responsible for the Employment Assistance service delivery of the Ontario Works Program providing

supports and services to each participant to reach their Employment/ Career goals. As well as to provide

necessary supports to children, youth & adults with congenital and developmental

disabilities. The Developmental Service Supports are to embrace the values of personal choice, dignity, social

inclusion and self-actualization in all of FWFN’s services offered, by assisting individuals to live and work as

valued members of society and the community. We want to make every effort to provide quality supports

and services that offer many options to individuals with intellectual disability, dual-diagnosis, and/or other

complex needs. This position will report directly to the Social Services Manager.

**Major Responsibilities**:

- Have basic knowledge on the Ontario Works Employment Program and its requirements
- Identify barriers to employment and assist clients with; job readiness skills, job searching strategies, writing resumes, and preparing for interviews
- Administer and interpret tests designed to determine the interest, aptitudes, and abilities of clients
- Implement or refer clients to workshops, programs and community services, etc.
- Liaison with local and external service providers, employers and placement agencies
- Monitor and evaluate clients and/or participants in employment assistance activities
- Completes all necessary documentation, including written reports/charts
- Maintains confidentiality of clients
- Promotes community inclusion, independence, and self-determinism for the individuals supported
- Supports clients to participate in the recreational, leisure, cultural, spiritual, educational and volunteer activities and affairs within the community
- Assists clients to find a satisfying and purposeful place in the community by enhancing their quality of life and promoting personal growth
- Supports individuals to identify, work towards and achieve their goals/personal outcomes
- Demonstrates a respectful relationship with each individual and a positive and professional relationship within the support team
- Act as a resource and liaison with families and community agencies
- Encourage self-expression of individuals supported and remain knowledgeable of verbal and non-verbal communications, including alternative communications systems and techniques
- Participates in relevant/required training and staff meetings
- Accompanies/transports individuals to appointments and activities in the community
- May be required to participate in activities with individuals
- Preform other duties as required

**Qualifications, Skills and Experience**:

- Developmental Service Worker Diploma, BA in Social Services, Social Services Worker, Child and Youth Worker, and 2 years of related experience
- Experience in supporting individuals with challenging behaviours
- Knowledge of developmental disabilities, mental illness, and dual diagnosis
- Experience working with people who have developmental disabilities within the community
- Interpersonal skills in communicating and counselling the people receiving support
- Creative skills to develop support strategies to enable people to achieve the outcomes that are most important to the clients
- Teaching skills to support clients to enhance their skills and abilities
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications (Word/Excel/Power Point)
- Must have experience working with high anxiety
- Knowledge of community resources
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrate ability to work independently, take initiative and make decisions
- A valid G driver’s license and the ability to drive without restrictions
- Valid First Aid, CPR and CPI
- A criminal records check is required.
