**Recreation Leader (2)**

The Nanaimo Canoe & Kayak Club offers various programs in the community for people to experience the sport of canoe-kayak in a fun, safe, and stimulating environment. The aim is to develop confidence on & off the water, all while benefiting the individuals’ social, physical, and emotional wellbeing. While the focus is on water safety, teamwork, fundamental movements, and active healthy living, recreation leaders provide participants with fun, fitness, friendship, and sport skill development with the opportunity for recruitment into Club programs.

Working with Club members and program participants, Recreation Leaders will develop greater skills in customer service, teamwork, communication, digital skills, leadership, program planning, and competence on the water.**

**RECREATION LEADER**
Start Date: May 1 - September 2, 2023
Rate of Pay: $17.20 - $22/hour
Time: Weekdays, Evenings, and Weekends

As a Recreation Leader, you will be involved in leading NCKC community outreach with school field trips and community group bookings, Learn to Paddle programs, Member Drop-ins, Special Events/Regatta Management, and youth Summer Camps.
- Certified in First Aid with CPR C
- Competent swimmer with water safety knowledge (Bronze Medallion or Cross an asset)
- Certified NCCP Community Coach and completion of Making Ethical Decisions Module
- Have Supervisory and/or mentorship experience
- Interest in Physical Education, Child & Youth Care, Recreation/Sport Management, & Education

**NCKC Recreation Leader duties and responsibilities**:

- providing a safe and engaging environment for all participants,
- leading games & teaching sport skills appropriate for the age and ability of program participants,
- communicating effectively with co-workers, participants, and parents,
- instructing participants on the care and proper use of Club equipment,
- adhering to NCKC & Safe Sport policies and procedures,
- demonstrating leadership, initiative, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude,
- assisting with first aid situations,
- providing active supervision of participants,
- promoting the Club & its programs,
- recruiting participants into Club member programs,
- completing reports as necessary (incident, accident, first aid, timesheets, etc)
- exercising risk management to ensure the safety of others and self,
- developing lesson plans and/or weekly training calendars,
- redirecting unsafe behaviours or actions,
- working co-operatively and collaboratively to support a positive work environment,
- developing and enforcing Club rules for safety and fun,
- completing a final report,
- reporting any unsafe situations immediately to the Board of Directors,
- respecting fair play, equity, and safety,
- attending and participating fully in all training and work-related opportunities, and
- following and demonstrating NCKC health and safety practices.

**ABOUT NCKC**:
The Nanaimo Canoe & Kayak Club (NCKC) is a community based not-for-profit amateur sport organization located in Loudon Park on Long Lake in Nanaimo, BC. It provides entry-level to high performance canoe/kayak training to people of all ages and skills levels within the Central Vancouver Island region.

**NCKC Mission**: We believe that recreational and competitive sports are healthy ways of building mature and responsible citizens, developing leadership skills, providing social interaction, and promoting full participation in society.

**NCKC Purpose**: Our purpose is to provide structured programs, which offer leadership and encouragement in the development of physical and social skills, with the goal of participating in organized competition, as well as providing access to recreational paddling opportunities for people of all ages and skill levels.

**NCKC Objective**: To participate in Canoe Kayak Canada (CKC) and CanoeKayak BC (CKBC) activities and to promote and develop all forms of paddle sports, both competitive and recreational. To organize and sponsor competitions, regattas, and social opportunities consistent with involvement in flatwater canoeing and kayaking. To instill in our members the values inherent in good sportsmanship and good citizenship and to develop mature and positive self-esteem.
