Two part-time - approximately 7.6 hours per week, Saturdays

**the challenge**

The Support for Kids and Youth (SKY) Club is a mentorship program that provides assistance to elementary, junior high, and high school students in their academic pursuits and other school-related requirements. This program is specifically tailored to aid newcomer kids in building networks, forming friendships, boosting their confidence and self-esteem, and acquiring essential social skills for effective interaction with their peers.

**the opportunity**
- **Planning and Facilitation**:Guide and mentor students, offering academic assistance, while creating a safe and encouraging atmosphere for both their academic endeavors and social interactions.
- **Communication**: Engage in open and effective communication with participants, parents, and the supporting volunteers. Ensuring that all parties have a clear understanding of their respective roles and responsibilities is vital.
- **Supervise Social and Recreational Activities**: Actively supervise and guide participants during their social and recreational activities within the program.

**what it takes**:
While all backgrounds will be considered, the most helpful history will include two years applied experience, knowledge, training working with newcomer children, youth and a strong understanding of academic guidance and social engagement and formal education in an accredited child and youth program or related field such as social work or education.

To do this job satisfactorily, the role requires regular Saturdays with the occasional team building or professional development opportunities weekdays, a clear Police Information Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Check and Child and Youth intervention Check. A valid Class 5 drivers' license and access to an insured and registered reliable vehicle is an asset.

- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the complexities of newcomer settlement, including family dynamics, educational placement, racism and discrimination, cultural brokering, mental health, employment, and system navigation.
- Ability to establish trust and build relationships with kids from a strength-based and human-centred approach.
- Confident decision-maker; thoughtful and persuasive personal style.
- Tenacious follow-through and organizational skills.
- Excellent verbal, written, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
- Positive, contributing, team-oriented individual with a commitment to life - long learning
- Ability to work on multiple projects, meet deadlines, organize and prioritize
- Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, social media platforms and online tools for virtual service delivery is an asset
- Fluency in English and any other language specifically Amharic, Arabic, French, Somali, Spanish, Swahili, Tagalog, or Tigrinya is a huge asset.
