The City of White Rock is a unique, ocean-side community of 22,000 citizens located half an hour south of Vancouver on the shore of Semiahmoo Bay and is known for its sunny weather, expansive beach, historic pier, delightful restaurants, and sense of community.
**Overview**
Reporting to the Manager, Parks, the Irrigation Systems Worker performs skilled and semi-skilled maintenance work of irrigation systems and turf areas. The work involves independently or in conjunction with a superior checking the operation of and performing routine maintenance on a variety of irrigation systems and performing repair and replacement tasks such as overhauling and rebuilding sprinkler heads and valves. In addition, the incumbent performs cultivation, maintenance and repair tasks to turf areas, lays out sports fields required specifications and monitors the work of contractor’s turf and irrigation work. The incumbent exercises considerable independence of judgment and action in this role. This role can occasionally work on weekends or for call outs as per the collective agreement and summer hours may vary.
**Qualifications**
Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by technical courses and seminar in irrigation systems and grass field maintenance plus considerable related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
**Certifications**
- BCWWA Cross Connection Certificate.
- CIT Level 1 or 2 preferred.
**Requirements**:
- Considerable knowledge of irrigation systems and controls and of the methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment used in installing, maintaining and repairing hydraulic and electric automatic and quick-coupling irrigation systems.
- Considerable knowledge of turf and grass maintenance, repair and cultivation and the lay outs of sports fields.
- Sound knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work.
- Ability to install, maintain and repair irrigation systems and controls under mínimal supervision.
- Ability to read and work with blueprints and plans related to the work.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts.
- Ability to make discretionary decisions, take initiative and exercise independent thought and good judgement, referring unusual and more complex operational problems to a supervisor.
- Ability to monitor the work of contractors engaged in turf and irrigation work.
- Ability to supervise the work of a small group of subordinates when assisting in irrigation systems and turf maintenance duties.
- Proficiency in the use of computer software including Microsoft Office in order to prepare and maintain records related to work.
- Skill in the use and care of tools, materials and equipment used in the work.
- A demonstrated ability to perform physical manual work in all types of weather is required.
- Class 5 driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
