The Youth Worker is responsible for the coordination and facilitation of Community Alternatives for Youth Programs focusing on Community Reintegration and Outreach in St. Thomas and Elgin County and supporting Extra-judicial Measures, Sanctions and Direct Counselling in St. Thomas and Elgin County.

**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Facilitate and promote the Community Alternatives for Youth Programming focusing on Reintegration and Outreach for Thomas and Elgin Counties
- Responsible for supporting, facilitating, and promoting Community Alternatives for Youth, Extrajudicial Sanctions and Direct Counselling Programs for St. Thomas and Elgin County including all paperwork associated with this role
- Facilitate group and/or one-to-one Community Alternatives for Youth Programming and Community Learning Hub Programs
- Process Referrals, Intakes and Completions
- Work with Youth Probation Services to facilitate Case Management Goals
- Work as an advocate for Youth with Families, Educators and Community agencies
- Attend all scheduled St. Thomas Youth Court dates as required
- Act as a mentor and positive role model for Youth
- Prepare/submit case notes, court reports, attend meetings, prepare monthly and quarterly statistical forms for the Ministry of Children and Youth Services and The Salvation Army as requested
- Support Student Placements as required
- Act as the Health and Safety Representative for the St. Thomas Office
- Perform other position related duties as required

**WORKING CONDITIONS**:

- This is a permanent full-time position based on 37.5 hours per week
- Schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities - some weekend and evening work may be required
- Occasional travel is associated with this position
- Providing transportation for youth will be required on occasion
- Service areas include St. Thomas and Elgin County

**QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS**:

- Completed two (2) or more years of Community College, i.e. Youth Worker Diploma, Social Services Diploma or equivalent diploma is required
- Degree in Social Services preferred
- Current First Aid/CPR and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certifications
- Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, own vehicle and insurance, a current copy of a driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

**EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE**:

- Minimum 2 years’ experience working with youth at risk
- Knowledge and experience of Restorative Justice Principals
- Working knowledge of Youth Criminal Justice Act
- Working knowledge of the area and community of St. Thomas and Elgin County

**SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES**:

- Ability to work both independently and under co-operative supervision
- Ability to relate to youth in group settings and one-to-one settings
- Ability to adhere to The Salvation Army Standards of Conduct and Code of Ethics
- Good public relation skills
- Strong oral and written communication skills and attentive and active listening skills; effective group skills
- Self-motivated and disciplined
- Demonstrate a high level of integrity, good judgment, and ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality
- Strong computer skills including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening
- Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities
