**About the role**

Reporting to the Vice President and Chief Accountant, the AVP, Accounting Advisory will be responsible for the provision of accounting advice on complex transactions, including acquisitions, capital and tax initiatives. This role also has responsibility for the planning and implementation of new accounting requirements, and works closely with the Financial Statements team to develop disclosures and support analytical review processes. As a corporate function, the Assistant Vice President, Accounting Advisory has global responsibilities across all of Sun Life’s business group. Reporting directly into the AVP, Accounting Advisory are two Directors, supported by a manager.

**What you'll be doing**
- Implement new financial reporting standards as required by International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
- Develop cross-functional working groups to consider implications of new requirements and develop accounting recommendations on key policy decisions.
- Support the Financial Statements and Regulatory Reporting teams with development of disclosures and analytical review processes.
- Lead initiatives to drive continuous improvement in how we execute our work, including increased use of technology
- Discuss accounting policy decisions with external auditors and address related audit enquiries.
- Develop training programs and global communications outlining new accounting policies and financial reporting developments.
- Manage and prioritize multiple competing tasks and deliverables.

**What you'll need to succeed**
- CA or CPA (US) designation
- University degree in accounting or commerce
- Minimum of 10 years of accounting advisory and reporting experience
- Experience within a public accounting firm, or large, complex, public company with international operations.
- Experience within a financial institution or insurance company is highly desired; knowledge of the insurance industry, products and related accounting issues would be an asset.
- Strong analytical skills
- Understanding of US GAAP and NAIC requirements would be considered an asset.
- The ability to influence senior leaders without formal authority in addition to working with multiple stakeholders across several geographies and businesses.
- Be able to drive a significant transformation across a complex, matrixed, international enterprise.
- Strong people, process and project leadership skills will enable this individual to mobilize internal and external resources necessary to ensure the successful completion of key tasks, initiatives and projects.
- Have the ability to develop creative yet practical solutions to meet the needs of the organization.
- Experienced people leader and team builder capable of effectively leading, motivating and inspiring a small but high performing team. A solid track record in people development is important.
- Show logic, intellectually curious, proactive and energetic.
- Enjoy collaborating with others while also taking ownership to drive complex projects to successful completion.
- The ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment will be key to this person’s success.
