**Position Purpose**
Reporting to the Manager, Machine Shop, the incumbent provides superior design, manufacturing and machining services using high-tech computer numeric control (CNC) machine tools. They supportsà the Faculty of Science teaching and research labs, and neighbouring University services.

**In this role, your responsibilities will include**:

- Works with the workshop manager to plan the work and design parts and assemblies. Chooses production methods and materials, and selects tools to purchase to meet project deadlines.
- Designs and applies the best machining techniques and then machines extremely precise prototypes and parts to very tight tolerances.
- Coordinates and programs CNC machine tools, designs part geometries, uses programming software in dialog mode to generate complex computer programs.
- Designs, manufactures and adjusts custom assembly templates required to launch a production run or to machine irregular or deformed parts.
- Provides advice on all technical aspects related to machining parts using CNC machine tools.
- Performs highly specialized welding of vacuum or high-pressure vessels, establishes procedures and instructions for specialized orbital welding equipment.
- Designs, manufactures and assembles parts for vacuum systems. Conducts leak detection using turbomolecular pumps, identifies the causes of failure and corrects them.

**What you will bring**:

- College diploma in mechanical engineering accredited in the province of Ontario, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- At least five years’ work experience, preferably in a scientific research setting.
- Knowledge of, and experience working with, vacuum and high-vacuum systems and their components, and in cryogenic techniques.
- Knowledge of metallurgy, sheet metal, carpentry and all other manufacturing techniques used in a research and development workshop.
- Extensive knowledge and experience in programming CNC machine tools in dialog mode or with software such as EZ-Cam or Mastercam.
- Experience in arc, TIG, MIG and orbital welding of steel, aluminium and stainless steel.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, follow instructions, and translate them into a precise plan that meets the needs of researchers.
- Ability to interact well with a multidisciplinary team of professionals.
- Bilingualism—French and English (spoken and written)
