1.0 JOB TITLE: Apprentice

2.0 BASIC FUNCTION:
The basic functions of the Apprentice include:

- Learning the skill sets of a Construction and Maintenance Electrician as laid out by the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.
- Assisting Electricians in: laying out, assembling, installing, testing, troubleshooting and repairing electrical wiring, fixtures, control devices and related equipment in buildings and other structures.

The Apprentice will be meeting corporate expectations of the position when he/she is:
a) Successful in maintaining and growing Employer’s current clientele.

b) Successful in completing jobs in compliance with electrical code, and with no ESA defects.

c) Successful in completing jobs on budget and on time.

d) Successful in displaying professionalism through workmanship, attitudes, and behaviours.

e) Successful in adhering to the Health and Safety Policies of Employer.

f) Successful in displaying willingness to learn from and respect for their supervising Electricians.

3.0 REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
The Apprentice reports to their assigned Apprentice Supervisor and to the Apprentice Advisor.

4.0 AUTHORITIES:
The following are principal authorities granted to the Apprentice:
4.1 Exercise the responsibilities and perform the duties of this position. This includes full responsibilities and duties covered herein, acting within the guidelines provided by the company’s Policies and Procedures Manual and Health & Safety Manual.

5.0 RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following are principal responsibilities of the Apprentice:
5.1 Adhering to the codes of the company’s Policies and Procedures Manual.

5.2 Completing all electrical work to code and in conjunction with ESA standards.

5.3 Taking pride in the appearance of work (final product is tidy, orderly, and aesthetically pleasing.)

5.4 Learning to trouble-shoot, problem-solve, make decisions and complete electrical work accordingly.

5.5 Providing quality work for the clients of Employer in a professional and timely manner.

5.6 Assisting Electricians in, maintaining accurate records of work completed and materials used in order to ensure that jobs are completed on budget.

5.7 Reviewing the Training Standards with the Apprentice Advisor on a regular basis to ensure Training Units are being completed and signed off.

5.8 Following the terms of the MTCU Apprenticeship, including successful completion of school components.

5.9 Completing job paperwork at least one day per week, using proper spelling and grammar.

5.10 Maintaining an accurate record of the hours worked as an Apprentice.

6.0 PRINCIPAL DUTIES:
The following are principal duties of the Apprentice:
6.1 Work productively as a part of the team.

6.2 Perform housekeeping duties such as removing debris, tidying workspace, and cleaning the work area, in conformance with Health & Safety Policies, and customer service standards.

6.3 Greet clients and assist Electrician in providing information to clients.

6.4 Assist the Electrician in his/her duties and learn to:
a) Assemble, install, test, and maintain electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus, and fixtures, using hand tools and power tools.

b) Diagnose malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components, using test equipment and hand tools, to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem.

c) Inspect electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes.

d) Plan layout and installation of electrical wiring, equipment and fixtures, based on job specifications and local codes.

e) Prepare sketches or follow blueprints to determine the location of wiring and equipment and to ensure conformance to building and safety codes.

f) Advise on whether continued operation of equipment could be hazardous.

g) Meet and deal with ESA inspectors.

h) Manage time effectively.

6.5 Use a variety of tools and equipment, and understand how they operate, such as power construction equipment, measuring devices, power tools, and testing equipment.

6.6 Perform documentation duties such as maintaining records and files.

6.7 Perform physically demanding tasks, such as digging trenches to lay conduit and moving and lifting heavy objects.

6.8 Perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms, legs and whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.

6.9 Maintain awareness of Electrical code changes, and read all ESA bulletins.

6.10 Assist electricians in maintaining clean and stocked company vehicles.

6.11 Proactively participate in process improvement.

6.12 Other related duties as assigned from time to time.

7.0 MEASURES OF PERFORMANCE:
The following will be used to evaluate the performance of the Apprentice:
