Job Summary
Organizational Status
This position is located at the British Columbia Centre on Substance Use (BCCSU), a provincially networked organization with a mandate to develop, help implement, and evaluate evidence-based approaches to substance use and addiction. As a University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine Centre, the BCCSU's vision is to transform substance use policies and care in BC by translating research into education and evidence-based care guidance. By supporting the collaborative development of evidence-based policies, guidelines and standards, the BCCSU seeks to improve the integration of best practices and care across the continuum of substance use, thereby serving all British Columbians. The BCCSU seeks to achieve these goals through integrated activities of its three core functions: research and evaluation, education and training, and clinical care guidance.
Work Performed
Assist PI and research staff to draft, and implement research protocols based on the established principles of community-based research and anti-colonial epistemology.
Assist in the process of development and implementation of research tools including drafting and reviewing informed consent documents, qualitative interview guides, knowledge translation presentations and activities.
Assist the research team in carrying out data entry and analysis including uploading transcripts to data management software (NVIVO), coding qualitative interviews (identifying key themes), and provide support in discussing areas of insight for possible publication.
Assist the research team to develop publications and presentations based on project findings including drafting, editing, and assist in presenting at conferences and other related events.
Participates in all aspects of data collection including obtaining informed consent, conducting one-on-one qualitative interviews, ethnographic fieldwork, maintaining strict participant confidentiality, ensuring that data collection adheres to ethical standards, etc.
Works closely with the research team to develop publications and presentations based on project findings including drafting, reviewing, editing, and presenting at conferences and other related events.
Maintains ongoing relationships with community members and organizations relevant to research projects (e.g., Dr. Peter Centre, VANDU, etc.) through knowledge translation events, recruitment activities, and other community-based events.
Maintains strict confidentiality related to participant identification and release of research data
Participates in ongoing staff training and professional development activities.
Carries out any other related duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Decisions made in this position are crucial to the operation of the study. Any errors, including but not limited to breaches in confidentiality and missed/late appointments, could threaten the safety and wellbeing of research participants and jeopardize relationships with community members and partners.
Supervision Received
The Peer Research Assistant will receive research training and day-to-day guidance from the Research Coordinators and management and direct oversight from the Research Managers and Principal Investigators.
Supervision Given
This position does not involve any supervision responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
- Lived or living experience with substance use, safer supply, and/or HIV
- Past experience and/or interest in working with people with living with HIV and and/or substance use.
- Comfort working on the computer including experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)
