**What you will be doing**:
Carry out the statutory duties and responsibilities as the Fire Chief, as required by applicable acts and regulations. Responsible for planning, organizing, leading and implementing the operations of Fire Suppression, Fire Prevention & Public Education, Training, Communications, Mechanical and Administration sections of the Department. Ensures effective coordination of these functions and that effective and appropriate strategies relative to these functions form part of corporate decisions. Responsible for the development of policies and long-range strategies to guide the department in accordance with the strategic direction of Council. Acts as an informed advisor and resource to Council regarding Fire-related services, conducts qualitative and quantitative research and analysis when submitting reports as directed by the City Manager, Deputy City Manager and/or Council. Responsible for the preparation of the annual operating and capital departmental budgets. Implements the approved program and budget of expenditures for carrying out the activities to which the Chief is responsible for and maintains expenditures within limits prescribed. Monitors budget performance and reports variances to the Deputy City Manager. Represents the Corporation and Fire department in a variety of forums including those with senior government, media, public events, regional partnerships and community group initiatives. Interacts with a network of professional contacts for the exchange of knowledge, solutions and best practice improvements in response to changing regulatory and business environments, as well as with customers and the public as necessary to support all projects, departmental programs and strategic objectives in a positive and participatory manner. Serves as an Alternate Community Emergency Management Coordinator for the City and may fulfill the role of Fire Coordinator or Alternate Fire Coordinator within the Region of Waterloo “Mutual Aid Plan”, as appointed by the Fire Marshal of the Province of Ontario.
**Job Profile**:
The City of Cambridge is looking to fill the position of Fire Chief. Reporting directly to the City Manager, as the leader of the Cambridge Fire Department (CFD), the Fire Chief plays a critical role in ensuring public safety through the delivery of fire suppression, specialty rescue teams, safety education and fire prevention services. The Fire Chief assumes the overall responsibility for the CFD operations, employing approximately 150 firefighters, and administrative/command staff team members. The Fire Chief oversees the Emergency Management program on behalf of the City, facilitating the City's response, preparedness and legislative requirements during a major emergency event.
**Education**:
- Undergraduate Level - Four years or equivalent in Public Administration or Emergency Management
**Experience and Knowledge**:
- Minimum ten (10) years of progressively responsible fire service experience with at least seven (7) years at the officer rank where you have gained technical operations expertise, knowledge of applicable legislation, codes, standards and have applied best practices
- Management experience that includes superior leadership of others in a unionized environment
- Proven ability to provide effective command over firefighting staff
- Ability to work with elected officials and staff at all levels
- Demonstrated high level of skill and aptitude as an empowering and effective leader and communicator who creates an engaged working environment that fosters excellence and respects diversity in background and thinking
- Ability to demonstrate business acumen necessary to oversee a large, complex department

**Your compensation**:
This position is within Band Level 13 and has an annual salary range of $162,650 to $198,352. We offer a comprehensive benefit package and are an Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS) employer.
**Hours of work**:
Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm (35 hours per week). Evenings and weekends as required.
