**About the position**: The Community Health Broker (CHB) collaborates with a variety of BCHU interdisciplinary teams and works with priority populations to bring about positive health changes. The incumbent will support BCHU’s Healthy Communities Team, with an emphasis on harm reduction strategies and initiatives to protect the health and well-being of the community. The CHB will address issues affecting the health of the community by decreasing barriers to accessing health services and offering additional community supports while building on existing strengths in the individuals and families.

**Key Responsibilities**:
The Community Health Broker must pair genuine dedication to supporting those in need in the community and their families with openness and acceptance of differences in others.
- Promote and facilitate various activities and sessions with priority populations that promote socialization, skill building, and self-esteem e.g. cooking.
- Utilize BCHU educational materials to deliver health messaging and initiate group discussion.
- Link individuals to additional community supports that provide access to food, health services, housing, and social recreational programming.
- Collaborate with community partners and agencies to support harm reduction initiatives:

- Distribute harm reduction supplies to individuals in partnership with The AIDS Network.
- Process harm reduction supply orders from community partners.
- Maintain harm reduction supply inventory at BCHU.
- Restock community “Our HealthBox” (vending machine) as needed.
- Monitor and exchange sharps bins throughout the community.
- Retrieve needles that have been reported by the community.
- Provide needle pick-up training as requested.
- Document according to BCHU’s policy and procedure.

**Qualifications and Competencies**:

- Knowledge of the substance use health continuum, from no use at all to substance use disorder.
- Practical experience working with priority populations and those with lived experience is required.
- Familiarity with local community partners.
- Must have a friendly, non-judgmental, and self-starting attitude.
- Proven ability to work independently under mínimal supervision in a client-centered environment.
- Experience with computer software including Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook.
- Excellent communication, organizational and time management skills are necessary.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team setting.
- A valid Ontario driver’s license and reliable vehicle access.
- Fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and are able to provide proof on immunization.

Terms and conditions of employment are in accordance with ONA Allied Collective Agreement.

Salary range: $22.05 per hour to $26.57 per hour (70 hours in a two-week period). OMERS pension and a comprehensive Health and Dental benefits package.
