Job description

As a GIS Technician within the Asset & Quality Management Division, you will play a vital role in supporting the effective management of infrastructure assets and ensuring quality control of spatial data. Your responsibilities will involve utilizing geographic information systems (GIS) technology to create, analyze, and manage spatial data related to various assets. You will collaborate with internal teams and provide valuable expertise to optimize asset management processes.

Essential responsibilities

Demonstrate a commitment to upholding and promoting the core values and competencies of Chatham-Kent.
Assists with maintaining compliance with Asset Management (O.Reg588/17) and other regulatory requirements including but not limited DWQMS and Consolidated Linear Infrastructure
Develop and produce a variety of GIS mapping products, both digital and hard-copy, to support asset management initiatives.
Converts and analyzes infrastructure-related asset data, and generates maps, reports, and other types of visualizations to support staff in analyzing and presenting information
Ensure the quality assurance of new or revised data by adhering to standards specified in the GeoDatabase and other applicable guidelines.
Perform ongoing maintenance of GIS datasets associated with infrastructure assets, such as roads, sidewalks, bridges, signs, culverts, guiderails, traffic, and transit systems.
Provide technical support and expertise to internal staff and the public for day-to-day and ad-hoc requests related to GIS information and analysis.
Utilize quantitative methods to process spatial data, enabling calculations, models, and spatial relationship insights.
Interpret, convert, import, and export data between GIS and other formats, such as Civil Engineering drawings and AutoCAD.
Acquire, manage, display, and analyze spatial data using GIS technology.
Evaluate the outcomes of implemented solutions, suggesting alternative approaches and extracting lessons learned.
Operate survey equipment, including GPS, total stations, automatic measuring devices, transits, and levels, for field data collection and verification.
Contribute to research efforts aimed at enhancing the overall value of the GIS system.
Conduct field/site inspections, including observations during construction activities, and support contract administration processes.

Essential qualifications

College diploma or university degree in Geographic Information Systems, Computer Science, Integrated Planning Technology, or an equivalent program.
Two (2) to four (4) years of relevant experience in a similar role.
Proficiency with municipal government operations and familiarity with infrastructure information systems, GIS databases, and ESRI ArcGIS software.
Demonstrated experience in developing and maintaining GIS data and other GIS output products.
Strong understanding of data conformity standards within the GeoDatabase.
Previous involvement in maintaining GIS datasets, particularly related to roads, sidewalks, bridges, signs, culverts, guiderails, traffic, and transit systems.
Experience analyzing spatial data and translating client requirements into actionable GIS reports and thematic maps, preferably within a municipal context.
Familiarity with working with GIS data from Civil Engineering drawings and AutoCAD.
Proven ability to operate survey equipment, such as GPS, total stations, automatic measuring devices, transits, and levels, for field data collection.
Effective at performing field/site inspections.
Capable of implementing quality assurance and quality control procedures.
Proficiency in ESRI ArcGIS 10.x, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, or a similar GIS software program.
Working knowledge of AutoCAD and AutoCAD 3D Map.
Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) or equivalent software.

VB Script, SQL, Python or other programming language would be an asset

ESRI ArcGIS Desktop Entry Certification would be an asset

Work environment/hours of work

This position will work both indoors and outdoors
This position works weekdays, with occasional weekend hours
