Introduction The Mi'kmaw/Indigenous Student Support Worker will work primarily with Mi'kmaw, First Nations and Indigenous students, providing support to them and their families in making schooling a positive experience. The goal of the Mi'kmaw/Indigenous Student Support Worker is to help Mi'kmaw, First Nations & Indigenous students achieve academic success, improve their self
- esteem and remain in school by fostering a positive environment of good will, respect and dignity among students, parent/guardians, school administration, teachers and all community members. The Mi'kmaw/Indigenous Student Support Worker will require a high degree of professionalism and confidentially working in this environment. The Mi'kmaw/Indigenous Student Support Worker is usually required to work outside of regular school hours an average of ten hours per month..-Minimum Requirements - Completion of a post-secondary diploma or certificate in Human Services, Social Services or a relate field.
- An equivalent combination of education/experience may be considered in lieu of a diploma/degree program.
- Experience working with Mi'kmaw communities, with particular emphasis on Mi'kmaw, First Nations and Indigenous youth.
- Being a person of Mi'kmaw/Indigenous descent.

- Knowledge of issues facing Mi'kmaw, First Nations & Indigenous youth within the context of education and schooling
- Knowledge of how race, class and gender and other forms of discrimination impact Mi'kmaw youth

- Demonstrated ability in working collaboratively as part of a team involving students, school administration, teachers, parents/guardians, support agencies and surrounding communities
- Ability to work and to follow through with assigned tasks independently
- Above average interpersonal skills and written and verbal communication skills
- Willingness to acquire a thorough knowledge and understanding of the community served by the schools and to attend related community meetings
- Knowledge of, experience in, and a commitment to the principles of race relations, cross-cultural understanding and human rights
- Knowledge and experience in mediation and conflict resolution
- Ability and desire to engage in continuing education and skills development
- Knowledge of Mi'kmaw language
- Knowledge of Social & Emotional Learning

A valid Nova Scotia's driver's license and or access to a properly insured vehicle is required to service the multiple school sites.
