About Aboriginal Friendship Centre of Calgary

The Aboriginal Friendship Centre of Calgary (AFCC) is a non-profit organization with a mandate to provide social, cultural, education and employment services to the Aboriginal peoples within the Calgary Metropolitan area. AFCC plays a regular and significant role in the daily lives of our members in many ways: providing care for our children, our elderly, our in need and our homeless; enabling access to cultural and spiritual care; offering referrals for suitable housing, food, clothing, pursuit of education, skill development and training; and building a resourceful Aboriginal community. AFCC's non-profit family is an expression of how we live, what we value, where we turn for comfort and where we turn when in need. AFCC is a community leader in the advocacy of Indigenous social and cultural services while serving as a support and community resource to other Indigenous Service Agencies on the local, provincial and national level.

About the Role

We are seeking to fill a temporary full time position. The Community Outreach worker will provide professional outreach services and offer traditional holistic care to improve and maintain the spiritual, physical, intellectual, social and emotional well being of Indigenous individuals, families and youth and their communities. This is delivered in a front line capacity, their key focus is developing relations with urban unhoused Indigenous peoples and those exiting homelessness to provide them with options to improve on quality of lifestyle. This position requires working well with others in the same mission and be a reliable self starter.

**Responsibilities**:

- Provide support in obtaining essential support services for clients such as food hampers, shelter and transportation. i.e. food bank referral, shelter referrals, bus tickets or determine access to a monthly low income bus pass.
- Serve as an advocate for clients by creating a bridge between them and community agencies.
- Provide basic health education for clients within the community.
- Conduct intakes and assessments and liaise with individuals, family members and youth to understand the needs of the people seeking help.
- Provide individuals, families and youth with support in obtaining basics such as healthcare, education and housing arrangements.
- Create and implement outreach strategies to ensure the success of the program.
- Coordinate activities so that the clients we serve can be helped with everyday tasks.
- Serve as an emotional support system by providing counseling to emotionally disturbed individuals, families and youth, suggesting involvement in support groups. - Determine type and availability of resources needed to meet the needs of individuals, family

members and youth.
- Coordinate traditional holistic activities offered by the program to clients as needed or if requested. i.e. sweat, Elder guidance or access to traditional medicines, smudge.
- Create and distribute informational material for clients as to inform them of the time, place and type of services being made available to them.
- Act as a liaison between clients, community programs and social service programs.
- Data input as required and monthly report writing

**Qualifications**:

- Must have prior knowledge of Indigenous culture, history and ceremonial practises as well as traditions.
- A degree in social work or diploma or
- Must have current (within 6 months) Police/Vulnerable Sector check
- Valid drivers licence, clean abstract.
- Basic computer skills.
- Extensive knowledge of current housing options and larger social services system navigation.
- Extensive knowledge of Indigenous community resources.
- Effective interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills.
- Responsible time management/organizational skills and reliability are essential.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize.
- Up to date emergency first aid, level A and naloxone/narcan training.
- Knowledgeable in outreach work and proven skills in community development.
- Active listening skills and social perceptiveness are key in this roll.
- 2-5 years’ experience working with Indigenous peoples on the frontlines.

Full time position (1 year fixed contract) ,40 hr work week Monday-Friday (weekends as needed)
