Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, performs animal health related duties and technical procedures related to care and use of animals. Prepares animals and assists in surgical procedures. Administers treatment and medications. Provides pre
- and post-operative care. Coordinates use of operating room and equipment. Acts as resource person. Maintains records. Maintains equipment.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
(i) Performs technical duties related to the care and maintenance of animals. Examines and monitors health of animals. (ii) Participates in projects and experiments. Participates in experimental and surgical procedures; participates in modification of protocols. (iii) Performs euthanasia and necropsy. Prepares animals for surgery and provides post-operative care of animals. (iv) Schedules operating room times. Prepares surgical facility, including equipment and drugs. (v) Discusses diagnosis and treatment with veterinarian. Administers medications and treatments. Collects samples and performs certain tests and analyses. (vi) Updates and maintains standard operating procedures. Compiles and analyses data. Maintains records and prepares report. Prepares invoices for various services charged to clients. (vii) Acts as resource person. Instructs others on procedures and operation of equipment. Provides technical guidance and assistance concerning work methods, the use of equipment and techniques, and the analysis of results. (viii) Ensures sufficient inventory and purchase of all animal care supplies, equipment and materials. Maintains equipment, performs minor repairs and arranges for service and major repairs. (ix) Ensures compliance with safety regulations in the use of equipment. Ensures proper storage, handling and disposal of hazardous materials. (x) Keeps abreast of new developments in the field to update skills and knowledge. (xi) Uses a variety of equipment such as anesthesia equipment, autoclaves, microscopes, spectrophotometers, centrifuges, veterinary instruments and computers. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: - DEC III (Animal Health Technology) - 3 years of related experience

Other Qualifying Skills and Abilities:

- Five years’ experience in a related field is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to handle and care for laboratory animals. Knowledge of animal surgery and colony management.
- Comfortable with public speaking. Demonstrated ability to work in a PC environment using word processing, databases and spreadsheets and presentation software. Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to multitask.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy boxes (i.e. 30lbs).
- Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory animal care and procedures. Experience working with multiple species.
- Demonstrated ability to handle priorities, working efficiently and collaboratively on a tight schedule.
- Excellent attention to detail. Proven ability to clearly transmit and receive information.
- Must be available on week end on rotation.

Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 3 on a scale of 0-4.
