**Basic Function** Reporting to the Wildlife Care Supervisor for the area, this position is responsible, under close supervision and training, for providing day to day care for the animals in the collection, presenting educational talks and demonstrations for the public, and answering queries of a general nature when asked by visitors. This position is also responsible for assisting and providing support in implementing the Strategic Plan.

**Responsibilities**:

- Reports to the supervisor the absence of or any defect in any equipment or protective device that they are aware of and which may endanger themselves or another staff member.
- Reports to the supervisor any contravention of the Ontario Health & Safety Act.
- Ensures all accidents and hazards are reported to the supervisor immediately.
- Work in a safe manner at all times in compliance with Health and Safety, WHMIS, and Toronto Zoo policies and procedures.
- Follows all branch instructions.
- Attends appropriate training courses as required.
- Cleans and decorates exhibits and holding areas.
- Provides regular activities for the enrichment of the animals.
- Observes the collection for signs of illness, indifference or injury and reports same.
- Notes dietary problems and reports changes and other pertinent information to the appropriate persons.
- Notes and reports repairs and Stores items required.
- Maintains tools and equipment in good repair and order and reports any deficiencies.
- Assists with the restraint, crating, and uncrating of animals.
- Assists in the training of animals.
- Assists in the treatment and care of sick and injured animals and the hand rearing of animals as required.
- Ensures that quarantine regulations are adhered to and reports any irregularities.
- Answers queries from Zoo visitors, participate in keeper talks/demonstrations, and assists in "behind the scenes" tours.
- Assists in ensuring the general tidiness of the Zoo site, with particular attention to litter that may be harmful to the animals.
- May be required to carry and use a two-way radio.
- May be required to give guidance and direction to Keepers Grade 1, seasonal staff, Co-Op students, and job shadow students.
- Attends appropriate keeper training courses or any other recommended training course as required.
- Participates in conservation projects and related animal management planning.
- Works in a safe manner at all times in compliance with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS legislation, and Toronto Zoo Safety Policy and immediately reports all accidents and hazards to his/her Supervisor.
- Follows all Branch policies and procedures.
- Other related duties as requested by the Supervisor.

**Qualifications**:

- Must possess a certificate or diploma, at the community college level, in an animal-related course of study or equivalent training and experience.
- Must possess a minimum of four (4) years keeping experience in a major zoological collection.
- Must have experience working directly with dangerous animals.
- Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Must be able to produce brief but accurate reports.
- Must be able to answer questions from visitors and give educational talks.

- Must be capable of meeting the physical demands of the job, including the ability to lift 25 kg (55 lbs.)
- Must have working knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Information System (WHMIS) legislation, Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act, and Toronto Zoo Safety Policy.
- Must possess a demonstrated interest in and desire to work with and learn the proper care of animals in captivity and to make the public aware of conservation.
- Must possess the ability and willingness to work in a team setting.
- Must be able and willing to work shifts, weekends, and holidays.
