**Position Overview**:
The Foundations English stream focuses on integrated skills. The morning classes have a strong emphasis on oral communication, vocabulary acquisition, and grammatical development, which are integral skills for linguistic progress.

Students entering these levels may have very little previous experience with the English language, may be able to talk about their interests and everyday activities, or are able to ask and answer questions about familiar topics. They may understand simple messages or more complex language in routine conversations. Students have a range of experience with grammar and vocabulary, from very little to adequate for everyday communication. Reading ability may be very limited or able to read longer passages on familiar topics while writing may range from the word to sentence level ability.

As an instructor you will teach students how to ask and respond to questions, how to form basic sentences, and how to communicate in social situations. You will help students refine their pronunciation and develop sound recognition in listening skills. Students will practice strategies for increasing reading comprehension; such strategies include skimming for information and recognizing transitional words and phrases. Further attention will be given to sentence construction and paragraph development in writing. They will also learn to write basic documents such as letters. Students will be introduced to the basic organizational patterns of formal texts. They will read a variety of short texts, with a special emphasis on developing comprehension strategies and techniques (such as skimming and scanning). Special attention will be paid to vocabulary learning and the development of further grammatical competence.

Students in the class will be attending through a variety of modes. There will be students attending class in person, with some attending class live through Zoom and others participating in the class at their own convenience.

**Education and Qualifications**:

- Undergraduate degree required
- TESL or CELTA required
- Minimum 800 hours of experience in the following:

- Multi-level delivery which ranges from true beginner to high intermediate
- Delivering grammar lessons
- Designing and implementing exercises and activities to practice four skills of English (reading, writing, listening, speaking) at the beginner, high-beginner, and intermediate level
- Introducing and teaching learner strategies
- Determining emerging areas of individual language issues and devising exercises to target these
- Minimum 1600 hours of experience in the following:

- Teaching true beginners, beginners and intermediate level students
- Introducing and teaching reading strategies
- Teaching beginner and intermediate writing strategies
- Experience with challenges of teaching language without measurable reading ability
- Experience teaching English as an additional or foreign language to adults
- Experience teaching a multi-level class with different students’ needs and goals
- Ability to design and balance course content through a combination of student interest and key topics
- Ability to engage students whether they are in class or through alternate delivery
- Experience teaching basic penmanship lessons and basic composition (at the sentence level) as asset
- Familiarity with different English accents
- Ability to foster confidence and independent learning in learners
- Ability to adapt tasks and lessons to meet the diverse goals of the students
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal, negotiating, and conflict-resolution skills to deal effectively with a wide variety of situations
- Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs and issues of a diverse student body
- Strong computer skills, including use of Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with online tools and resources for teaching
- Varied teaching experience is considered an asset (in terms of skill, level, demographic, and location)
