Saskatoon, Canada University of Saskatchewan Full time

**PostDoctoral Fellow - Canadian Centre for the Study of Co-operatives**:
**Background**:There is a growing body of evidence, and historical experience, showing that empowering local producers, particularly smallholder farmers, to make their own decisions over resource allocation, management, and marketing can generate sustainable agricultural, economic, nutritional, and societal benefits, as well as improved gender representation, relative to more traditional interventions focused on technology transfers or top-down solutions imposed by policymakers. The _Empowering Smallholder Farmers: Scaling Up Collective Action Through Co-operatives_ project is funded by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF), University of Saskatchewan’s Office of the Vice-President Research, and Nutrien.

**Primary Purpose**: The Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) will critically evaluate two facets of this growing awareness about the importance of giving producers more say in how they use foreign aid, new crop technologies, and agronomic strategies while working within the bounds of the public policy environment. The first facet relates to food security, including notably food utilization and related nutritional concerns. The second relates to how co-operatives can scale their efforts to serve an increasingly global agricultural market.

**Nature of Work**: The PDF reports to Dr. Marc-André Pigeon and works closely with scholars affiliated with the Canadian Centre for the Study of Co-operatives, Colleges of Pharmacy & Nutrition and Agriculture & Bioresources, and the Global Institute for Food Security.

The PDF will be a highly motivated individual who thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Sound judgment and discretionary decision making is required. The work requires a proactive and strategic approach in a complex environment and the ability to communicate effectively.

**Accountabilities**
- _Scoping Review, case studies, and mixed methods_ will allow the PDF to explore the complex interplay of socio-economic, cultural, economic, and political processes and outcomes that influence involvement and participation in production, consumption, and income generation from the sale of pulses in a co-operative context.
- _Deliverables:_** **Draft report based on the findings of the scoping review, regular written progress reports, and data to support future publications.

**Education**: Must have earned a doctoral degree no more than three years ago in agricultural economics, the sociology of agriculture, or a related discipline.

**Experience**: Must have experience in food security research and development in a developing country. Experience in conducting surveys and focus groups and working with government agencies and the private sector is required. Knowledge translation/transfer experience is required.

**Skills**
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communications skills
- Proven ability to independently:

- Undertake literature searches
- Plan and undertake research projects; and draft manuscripts and reports
- Good organizational and project management skills
- Strong data analysis skills
