**Assistant Computational Research Manager**:
The Canadian Hub for Applied and Social Research (CHASR) is a unique university-based research support and consulting service. Operating on a cost-recovery basis, CHASR regularly engages and supports academic-based researchers from a variety of disciplines, backgrounds, and institutions, government (federal, provincial, and municipal) and NGO clients, and private sector firms. With a broad range of experience, expertise, and tools at our disposal, CHASR supports a diverse array of applied and social research. We support all phases of research, including data collection, data processing, data analysis, and reporting. Our in-house supports and tools enable us to lend unique and innovative approaches to all CHASR-supported research.

**Typical Duties or Accountabilities**:

- Serves as a project resource, and occasionally a project manager, providing research support for CHASR research projects that require software development or maintenance as a deliverable or as an enabling technology.
- Helps to ensure quality control of projects and processes in CHASR.
- Develops collaborative professional working relationships, liaises, and partners with faculty and staff, ICT, and the University Library.
- Works closely with CHASR Research Managers and Specialists overseeing projects that employ software and makes timely recommendations about the best path forward.
- Learns new technologies, programming languages, and platforms based on project demands.
- Learns and incorporates software libraries needed to meet the project demands, or those requested by CHASR clients or Research Managers and Specialists.
- Plans, programs, and deploys high-quality software projects from conceptualization to completion.
- Actively develops custom code utilizing a variety of programming languages and platforms.
- Fully tests software throughout the project lifecycle.
- Implements changes requested by CHASR Research Managers and Specialists and CHASR clients.
- Produces high-quality internal source code documentation.
- Produces polished external software documentation.
- Plans and researches solutions to programming problems.

**Experience**: A minimum of three years of related experience in software development. Experience or evidence of capacity to facilitate and manage research projects and of fostering effective, cooperative, and collegial working relationships with a broad range of constituents in a complex environment are essential. Direct experience working in a research academic environment and experience working against project delivery deadlines is strongly desired.

Hands-on coding experience with the following technologies:

- JavaScript, jQuery, PHP, CSS, and X-Path.
- Java, C++, C#, or other object-oriented programming languages.
- Database programming in MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or MySQL; and
- Windows Server and Linux / Unix.
- Basic web server configuration.
- Data collection, cleaning, processing, and analysis in Python.
- Planning, programming, and deploying a software project from conceptualization to completion.
- Researching and recommending appropriate frameworks and content management systems for projects.
- Learning new programming languages, techniques, content management systems, frameworks, APIs, and programming libraries as needed; and
- Communicate effectively technical knowledge, concepts, and ideas to individuals without a computational background.

**Skills**: Demonstrated capacity to manage research studies of varying size and complexity; ability to provide information and advice to professional staff and researchers in a range of disciplines; ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and all levels of administration; ability to work independently and as a team member; ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines; and excellent communication, presentation, organization, time management, problem-solving, troubleshooting, and interpersonal skills.
