Utility Operator I/ii

We are hiring a full-time permanent Utility Operator at the Town of Vermilion. This role involves operating and maintaining our wastewater, treatment, collection and water distribution systems. Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Utility Operator will be a key member of our Infrastructure Services Team.
The position requires regular hours from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Additionally, the role includes participation in a weekly rotational on-call schedule.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain water, sewer, and storm facilities, including pumps, valves, and backup engines.
- Ensure compliance with the "Alberta Environment Code of Practice" to provide safe and potable drinking water.
- Conduct repairs on water, sanitary, and storm systems as needed.
- Operate municipal equipment, hand tools, and other equipment safely and effectively, using specific operational skills and procedures.
- Respond promptly and effectively to alarms and critical situations such as low/high pressure, high flow, reservoir levels, and power failures.
- Analyze and interpret data from the SCADA (System Control and Data Acquisition) system.
- Complete daily tasks as outlined in work orders generated by the administration/utility billing department.
- Perform monthly water meter readings for commercial and residential properties.
- Conduct seasonal maintenance activities such as hydrant flushing, winterization, line flushing, sewer flushing, and valve exercising.
- Participate in a rotating schedule for 24-hour emergency on-call response.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Level I or Level 11 Certification in wastewater collection and treatment.
- Level I or Level 11 Certification in water distribution
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduation from a post-secondary program in wastewater from an Alberta-accredited institution, such as the NAIT Water and Wastewater Technician program or its equivalent.
- High School Diploma or Equivalency.
- Hold a Class 5 Driver’s License.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Proficiency in operating and maintaining wastewater treatment and water distribution systems.
- Familiarity with environmental regulations and standards governing water and wastewater treatment operations.
- Ability to perform repairs and preventive maintenance on pumps, valves, and other water, sewer, and storm facility equipment.
- Skill in analyzing and interpreting data from SCADA systems and other monitoring tools.
- Commitment to maintaining a safe work environment and adhering to safety protocols.
- Experience following regulatory requirements and maintaining records for reporting purposes.
- Strong troubleshooting skills to diagnose and resolve issues related to water and wastewater systems.
- Team Collaboration: Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team and communicate effectively with stakeholders.
- Familiarity with municipal equipment, hand tools, and instrumentation used in water and wastewater operations.
- Flexibility to work in varying weather conditions and participate in on-call rotations for emergency response.
- Ability to interact courteously and professionally with the public and stakeholders.
