**POSITION**: Animal Care Specialist - ACA2

**TYPE**: Permanent; Part-time

**SHIFT**: 32 hours per week

**WAGE**: $21 per hour

**LOCATION**: BC SPCA West Vancouver Animal Centre

**CLOSING DATE**: Open until Filled

The BC SPCA West Vancouver Animal Centre is seeking a hard-working team player to take on the part-time role of Animal Care Specialist (ACA2). In this role you will participate in all animal care duties and ensure that optimal levels of care are administered to the animals based on the Five Freedoms. This position will focus on volunteer recruitment, support and training.

You are a self-motivated, energetic people person who enjoys working in a fast-paced, team oriented environment. You remain calm and compassionate while carrying on a several tasks at the same time. You are organized, reliable and customer-service oriented and have previous experience in animal husbandry. You care deeply about animals and uphold the highest animal care standards.

You will also assume a leadership role in designated areas of responsibility, through facilitating clear and effective communication of staff and volunteers as it relates to the provision of care and the completion of administrative functions.

Under the direction of the Branch Manager your experience & training will assist you:

- Work together and collaboratively with other staff and volunteers to benefit and enhance the health and welfare of shelter animals and create a harmonious team environment
- Ensure kennels, runs, and cat cages are kept in a manner that is best suited for the animal’s health and welfare as per the ShelterSense protocols
- Monitor the health and welfare of the animals through the maintenance of up-to-date kennel cards, record
- Assume a leadership role responsible and accountable for a designated area(s) of the shelter (areas include: dogs, cats, cruelty investigations)
- Oversee the activities of the animal care attendants (ACA 1) and volunteers assigned to area of responsibility, including ensuring that training has been provided and proper procedures are being followed
- Assist with the recruitment, selection, scheduling and management of volunteers in area of responsibility utilizing Better Impact or other tracking mechanism where applicable
- Maintain clear communication with staff and volunteers regarding the day-to-day operation and duties/tasks requiring completion
- Perform welfare and temperament assessments on animals as needed, ensuring that all ShelterSense protocols are followed and are consistent with the animal’s current assessment
- Act as an ambassador of the BC SPCA at all times and ensure customer and community relations are consistently professional and positive
- Answer telephones and walk-in inquiries in a courteous manner providing information satisfactory to the needs of the customer
- Ensure all procedures for receiving, licensing, or adopting all animals are conducted according to procedure and meet the needs of customers
- Assist in local and provincial fund-raising initiatives
- Other duties as may be assigned

**You will have**:

- High school diploma or equivalent
- Completion of Veterinary Assistant or Veterinary Office Assistant Program an asset
- Minimum of one year reception experience in a veterinary clinic
- Valid Class 5 BC Drivers’ License
- Strong desire to provide excellent customer service skills: patience, professional, positive attitude, attention to detail, adaptability
- Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
- Resourceful team player who excels at building trusting relationships with colleagues, customers and volunteers
- Highly motivated self-starter who takes initiative with mínimal supervision
- A sound knowledge of animals, their breeds, characteristics and common diseases
- Previous kennel or animal care experience will be considered an asset
- Demonstrable interest in all aspects of animal welfare
- Philosophical harmony with the mission, vision and strategic direction of the BC SPCA
- Position is physically demanding and includes heavy lifting, pushing and pulling which requires an individual with the ability to maintain a level of fitness and endurance to fulfill the required duties
- Computer experience: Windows, Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
- The animals in our care require attention seven days a week, must be flexible and able to work weekdays, weekends and statutory holidays
