This Research Associate will lead the highly interdisciplinary “cold” fusion sub group within the Berlinguette Research Group. Their responsibilities include setting goals and objectives, delegating tasks, reporting to stakeholders, overseeing the progress and performance of other scientists and research personnel, as well as quantum materials design, synthesis, and characterization. Additional details are provided below.
The successful applicant responsibilities may include:
- Conducting and supervising research in the field of cold fusion and quantum materials, including identifying and coordinating solutions for complex research problems in the fields of nuclear fusion, plasma physics, neutron detection and electrochemistry;
- Leading the development of novel approaches to nuclear fusion;
- Directing, supervising and coordinating data collection and analysis;
- Identifying issues, barriers, or challenges in the development of benchtop fusion reactors;
- Establishing new / maintaining existing national and international collaborations;
- Designing, synthesizing, and characterizing new quantum material membranes to increase the yield of nuclear fusion reactions;
- Oversee onboarding and training of research team members including students, postdocs and other research personnel.
Qualifications and Skills:
- A PhD in condensed matter physics;
- At least 10 years of research experience in highly correlated electron system and magnetism;
- Experience in leading and working with an interdisciplinary team;
- Excellent communication skills, including strong verbal and writing, research and interpersonal skills;
- Innovative and creative thinking and a logical approach to problem solving are also necessary;
- Self-directed and ability to work independently;
- Expertise in: the synthesis of single-crystalline quantum materials; x-ray diffractometry; energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy; scanning electron microscopy; and DSC/TGA;
- Experience with computer-aided simulations of quantum physics using density functional theory;
- Knowledge of measurements of the specific heat, magnetic susceptibility and electrical conductivity as a function of temperature and magnetic fields;
- Experience in Python programming, Origin Pro, LaTex, Mathematica, CAD software.
