Inclusive Education Advocate, Edmonton Region

**Reports to**

Director of Advocacy

As a family advocacy organization, Inclusion Alberta is committed to providing individuals with developmental disabilities and their families with personalized advocacy that contributes to a meaningful and inclusive life.

We are seeking an Advocate who is passionate about inclusive education and would like to work with families, schools, and school divisions to advance the inclusion of children with developmental disabilities in the regular education classroom. The Advocate will work directly with families and their children with developmental disabilities, and schools to address issues of access and quality in inclusive education.

Duties and Responsibilities:

- Support families to understand their rights in the education system.
- Work with families to identify and articulate their vision for their child(ren)’s inclusive education.
- Build positive and collaborative relationships with schools and school districts.
- Support families to build strong advocacy skills; identify and develop family leadership.
- Work with colleagues and leadership to develop and implement effective advocacy strategies.
- Track and report on emerging trends in inclusive education advocacy.
- Support other Inclusion Alberta initiatives as required, including fund development.
- Work directly with individuals with developmental disabilities and their families in the Edmonton region to develop a vision for an inclusive life in the community, including planning for adulthood and creating a personalized and individualized action plan toward achieving this vision
- Serve as a resource and guide to families and individuals with developmental disabilities to pursue support and services that enable inclusion.
- Support families to develop a network that shares their inclusive vision for their loved ones and supports their pursuit of inclusion
- Provides resources, information, and support to families to plan for and access community inclusion, including inclusive recreation and other community activities
- Develop and support the networking of families who are committed to pursuing inclusion
- Building family knowledge and capacity to learn how to use the resources available within their communities
- Support individuals with developmental disabilities and their families to understand further the importance of planning and preparation needed in high school to create opportunities for a meaningful life.

Qualifications:

- A University degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
- A deep and abiding commitment to inclusive education in the K-12 system and the inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in all aspects of community and home life.
- Demonstrated ability to develop positive and collaborative relationships with families and the systems with which they interact.
- Strong research skills, including previous experience understanding policy and legislation.
- Strong problem-solving and listening skills.
- Direct experience in the education system is an asset.
- Knowledge of the Family Supports for Children with Disabilities and Person with Developmental Disabilities programs is an asset.

Working Conditions:
**Job Type**: Part-time
Part-time hours: 30 per week
