Reporting to the Director of Indigenous Engagement, this role will require interaction with Operations (project teams), Business Development, Finance, and Support teams, as well as external rightsholders and stakeholders.
**SCOPE & RESPONSIBILITIES**:
Indigenous Engagement Specialist duties and responsibilities include providing support and guidance, as well administrative leadership to ensure meaningful and valuable interaction and dealings with Indigenous communities, businesses and organizations and related activities. Working collaboratively with the Director of Indigenous Engagement, the project delivery team, business development and the support teams, this person is a valuable team member through all phases of the project and program lifecycle, from research and due diligence early on, through to providing support in project planning, community outreach, project and program execution and close-out. It is a balance of analytical and administration functions, with a highly interpersonal and interactive element where success is dependent upon empathy and meaningful relationship building.
The Indigenous Engagement Specialist has the ability to effectively communicate virtually and in-person ensuring that all duties are completed accurately and delivered with high quality and in a timely manner. This person is also adept at fostering positive relationships, and exhibits a willingness to grow and learn, and potentially move into roles of greater responsibility and scope. This person will rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals and therefore a wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assist in managing our Indigenous engagement commitments in complex and high-risk projects throughout the project lifecycle involving Indigenous engagement strategies and plans, grounded in evolving best practices to advance reconciliation;
- Work collaboratively with Indigenous engagement and project delivery teams from multiple departments to assess impacts and assist in developing mitigation strategies, and monitoring programs;
- Assist with community relations, outreach and engagement programs as it relates to projects and partnerships (e.g. Indigenous benefits plans, training and capacity building programs);
- Provide strategic advice on maintaining relationships with Indigenous people, communities, and organizations;
- Identify, track, and monitor issues, concerns and needs identified by Indigenous communities, clients and partners and determine how Milestone can help them build mutually beneficial relationships and capacity building programs;
- Proactively work with business development team to develop business opportunities aligning service offering with the community needs;
- Maintain CCIB certification requirements by tracking and reporting on our metrics;
- Track, report on, and recommend corrective actions on our IBP project requirements;
- Maintain all action items/commitments with partnerships and facilitate executing within required timeframe;
- Act as a liaison internally and externally for National Indigenous History Month, National Truth & Reconciliation Day (Orange Shirt Day), and other dates of significance; Design, report, and distribute our Annual Partnership Reports;
- Support and co-lead Indigenous initiative and strategies;
- Research funding opportunities that align with our strategic planning;
- Prepare and submit funding reports;
- Perform a variety of administrative support activities to support all aspects of Indigenous Engagement (e.g. prepare, review and modify general templates, letters, reports, PowerPoint presentations, Word documents, Excel workbooks and other correspondence materials);
- Understand business and project processes and how they relate to Indigenous engagement and mutually beneficial opportunities;
- Contribute to the development of new ideas and approaches to improve how Milestone works and builds relations with Indigenous communities and businesses;
- Coordinate and schedule internal and external meetings, appointments, travel arrangements, and other logístical planning as required;
- Operate with a large degree of autonomy and independently complete high-quality work;
- Handle sensitive and confidential information requiring a high level of discretion;
- Have an interest and willingness to grow within the role and potentially beyond.
