Support Staff Full-time Appendix D Contract Replacement Position (May 22, 2023 to May 17, 2024)

(First consideration for Support Staff and Academic positions will be given to internal applicants in accordance with the respective Collective Agreements)

Reporting to the Manager of Accessibility Services, the Accessibility Advisor works collaboratively, as a member of an interdisciplinary team within Student Success Services, to support students with disabilities achieve academic success. The incumbent is responsible for facilitating academic accommodation processes which includes reviewing the history of the disability and its functional impact on learning, advising students of their rights and responsibilities, and working with students to develop a success plan that considers adaptive technology and devices, academic supports, peer supports, case management, counselling, career, and Co-op supports, and other supports/services offered by Conestoga College.

**Responsibilities**:

- Collecting and evaluating documentation to establish eligibility for accommodations
- Advising students with disabilities of rights, responsibilities, and procedures involved in accessing academic accommodations
- In consultation with students, developing and implementing individualized Letters of Accommodation to ensure College policies and practices are consistent with the Ontario Human Rights Code and other relevant legislation
- Facilitating seamless referrals accordingly and initiating a cross-functional success team to support individual students as needed
- Re-evaluating and adapting the plan with the student and relevant stakeholders as needed
- Executing a proactive communication plan to support new and returning students from admission to graduation
- Facilitating referrals to external community supports/services (e.g. transportation, housing, attendant care, community employment agencies) as needed
- Facilitating information sessions for prospective students and their support networks (e.g. families, high school resource teachers) regarding postsecondary opportunities, support services available, transition planning, and student success
- Developing and facilitating experiential workshops to support students with disabilities to: transition into postsecondary, develop/strengthen self-advocacy skills, successfully navigate disclosure of a disability as needed/desired, and transition from theory courses into field placements and co-op employment experiences
- Participating in School Specialty Teams within Student Success Services and actively contributing to the success of school-specific initiatives and projects
- Actively supporting professional development for faculty, and staff (including student leaders) on disability issues and the impact on learning
- Providing information to faculty on how to promote and support placement and co-op opportunities for students with disabilities
- Contributing to the planning and execution of departmental and College events such as College Fair, Open house, Discovery Day, Orientation, and PASS/STEPS
- Participating in relevant meetings and actively contributing to the success of the Accessibility Services team, School Speciality Teams, and Student Success Services project teams and committees
- Working with the Manager, department, and School Specialty Team to research and respond to changing student demographics and program trends

Qualifications:

- Four-Year Degree in Disability Studies, Education, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field is required; Graduate Degree preferred
- Three years of experience working in disability services provision, preferably in a post-secondary setting
- Working knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code, the AODA, and other relevant legislation in the post-secondary context
- Commitment to principles of empowerment and inclusion
- Display a high degree of initiative and creative thinking skills
- Excellent written/verbal communication and strong interpersonal skills required
- Flexibility in the work schedule, including one late shift per week
- Ability to travel to satellite campuses
- Demonstrated experience working with students who have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Acquired Brain Injury, Learning Disabilities, Psychiatric Disabilities, Physical and Sensory Disabilities
- Excellent judgment, analytical, reasoning, and problem-solving skills to assess documentation, evaluate student needs, recommend and develop accommodation plans and evaluate service delivery
