Job Title: Early Childhood Assistant

Work location: Markham South Welcome Centre

Work Team/Unit: LINC - York Region

Hours: 27.5 hours per week, 12 weeks of layoff during LINC closure

Hour Rate: $19.25 per hour

Status: Unionized

Essential duties and responsibilities
- Implement procedures in the Care for Newcomer Children (CNC) program in accordance with the program philosophy that supports the development of the individual child and the settlement of the child and family;
- Ensure that the facility and activities meet the needs of the children, as well as the health and safety requirements set out in the CNC Requirements;
- In collaboration with ECE, develop and implement child-centered programs that support and promote the physical, cognitive, emotional and social development of children, either in person or virtually;
- Work with team members to create a positive and welcoming environment;
- Ensure programs and services provided are culturally sensitive and supportive of the CNC goals;
- Plan and maintain an environment that protects the health, security and well-being of children;
- Assess the abilities, interests and needs of children and discuss progress or concerns with parents and other staff members;
- Guide and assist children in the development of proper eating, dressing and toilet habits;
- Set up and take down equipment and other items used in the program;
- Ensure highest standards of services are provided and maintained through appropriate training；
- Keep abreast of information and training provided by CMAS.

**Qualifications**:

- Certificate in Early Childcare Assistant;
- Minimum of two years of relevant experience, preferably in a structured child care facility;
- Experience and knowledge working in a formal setting with children of the ages that will be cared for, specifically between the ages of 19 months to 4 years;
- Knowledge of Child Care and Early Years Act;
- Oral and written proficiency in English (minimum CLB Level 5 in Listening and Speaking; Level 4 in Reading and Writing); oral and written proficiency in a language commonly used by clients such as Chinese, Farsi, or Arab a strong asset.
- Demonstrated understanding of the SPO requirements as set out in the CNC requirements;
- Excellent knowledge of cultural and social backgrounds of newcomer children and families, including their settlement and integration needs, both general and specific;
- Demonstrated skills and experience with teamwork, conflict management and problem solving;
- Ability to manage time and meet deadlines;
- Ability to use frequent light to medium physical effort, involving lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, reaching, kneeling, stooping, and crouching

Other requirements:

- Vulnerable Sector Screening is mandatory;
- Valid CPR and First Aid Certification.
