**Role Responsibilities**:

- Reporting to the Contaminated Sites and Remediation Unit Manager, the Contaminated Sites (CS) Regulatory Coordinator provides regulatory oversight of contamination management in Alberta. The position communicates regulatory expectations to stakeholders to ensure alignment with provincial legislation, policy and the Contaminated Sites Policy Framework.- The position may also provide input and support to the policy development process and serve in an advisory capacity. Knowledge is based on expertise in areas of hydrogeology, geoscience, environmental engineering, soil sciences and/or chemistry as it relates to contamination management in groundwater, soil and soil vapour. The position provides expert guidance to ensure a consistent approach to providing and interpreting regulatory expectations.
- Overall responsibility is to ensure that contaminated sites are properly assessed, managed and remediated based on desired outcomes, department priorities and policies. The primary role of the CS Regulatory Coordinator involves data-driven, risk-informed management expressed through advice, recommendations and regulatory expectations. This position also works with the Unit Manager on priorities and discusses actions on files as required.
- Specific activities include:
- Reviewing site assessments, Remedial Action Plans and Risk Management Plans
- Reviewing and assessing Guideline modification proposals
- Reviewing technical submissions for a variety of contaminated sites and communicating outcomes as well as regulatory expectations to site owners and consultants
- Review of routine soil and groundwater assessments as part of EPEA-approved facility requirements
- Identifying policy gaps and working collaboratively on solutions including the development of operational policy and other innovative solutions
- Leading or contributing to the development of education and outreach initiatives
- Providing direction and mentorship to other staff when needed
- Maintaining a holistic and objective perspective to ensure fairness, consistency and clarity in program delivery

The work performed is within the current mandate of the Department and the provisions of the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA), associated regulations and provincial and national standards/guidelines for the protection of the environment and human health and restoring land to productive uses.**Qualifications**:
**Required**:

- University degree in a field that is directly related to contamination management
- Four years related experience

**Equivalence**:

- A diploma in a related field with 6 years relevant experience may be considered
- Additional related education considered in lieu of experience based on one year of experience for one year of education and vise versa, to a maximum of 2 years

**Assets**:

- Eligibility for membership with a relevant professional association is an asset
- Experience and knowledge in the primary issues related to environmental contamination management in Alberta
- Experience and working knowledge of Alberta’s environmental legislation, regulations and guidelines related to contaminated site assessment and remediation including: EPEA (Part 5); Alberta’s Contaminated Sites Policy Framework and other relevant regulations, codes of practice and guidance
- Experience in assessing vapour inhalation risks or managing vapour issues
- Ability to interpret data from technical reports, environmental site assessments, risk management and remediation programs as well as exposure control programs
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of applicable field and laboratory evaluation, testing, monitoring, sampling and QA/QC procedures to determine, assess and validate reported soil, groundwater and vapour quality conditions
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of general and organic chemistry, environmental chemistry, transport and fate of contaminants in environmental media (soil, groundwater and vapor)
- Interpersonal, negotiation and conflict resolution skills and experience in working with industry, the public, government and other agencies on often sensitive and financially significant issues
- Strong organizational skills
- Effective communication skills with experience in communicating with stakeholders in a manner that provides knowledge, educates and reflects empathy
- Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office 365
- An understanding of the importance of proper records management
