Alberta Education supports students, parents, teachers, and administrators from Early Childhood Service (ECS) through Grade 12. The Ministry has the following responsibilities: develop curriculum and set standards; evaluate curriculum and assess outcomes; teacher development and certification; supports students with diverse learning needs; fund and support school boards; First Nations, Métis and Inuit and Francophone education; and oversees basic education policy and regulations.

**System Excellence Division**

System Excellence is responsible for the areas of teaching and leadership excellence and provincial assessment. This includes certification of all teachers, principals and superintendents in the province; developing and implementing professional practice standards; and conducting practice assurance in relation to the teaching profession. System Excellence division also develops, administers, marks and continually improves Alberta’s provincial assessments, including the Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs), Diploma Exams (DIPS), Student Learning Assessments (SLAs) and Literacy/Numeracy Assessments.

**Role Responsibilities**:
As a Writer/Editor you will be responsible for providing professional writing/editing services for communications and educational content related to provincial assessment. The position works collaboratively with content managers, program areas, and other members of a production team. The writer/editor is responsible for ensuring industry, Ministry, Division, and Branch editing and writing standards.

**Provides professional editing and/or draft writing to Branch, Sector or Division staff in the creation of digital and print provincial assessments.**
- Reviews original materials to ensure the language used communicates the intent of the document and can be understood by the intended audience.
- Identifies and implements necessary changes regarding spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax, and word usage.
- Ensures accuracy and consistency in such editorial aspects as writing style, spelling, punctuation, spacing, headings, colour, graphics, and layout.
- Clarifies meaning and consistency of facts and other production requirements.
- Identifies concerns regarding the clear and accurate expression of content and subsequently negotiates and addresses with content managers all questions and concerns that result from editing of the product.
- Reviews manuscripts to incorporate input from committees, or writes parts of a manuscript on the basis of content and research supplied by content managers.
- Consistently follows the established division and/or branch production processes.
- Ensures clear instructions are given to team members regarding necessary changes and reviews all requested changes.
- Adheres to templates and style guides.
- Throughout production of content, reviews and edits all requested changes.
- Ensures that appropriate digital presentation strategies are used and that tone and language style are appropriate for the user. Ensures assessment products conform to industry, ministry, division, and branch specifications and standards.**Plans and organizes information gathering and tasks and presents them in a format consistent with departmental policies and of interest to readers.**
- Assists in the development and enhancement of process documentation (e.g., glossaries, style guides, terminology).
- Suggests any changes that will contribute to improved quality of content and/or appearance.
- Assists branch, sector or division staff with the preparation of provincial assessment documents.
- Adheres to established production processes and provides input and recommendations for continuous improvement of the processes.
- Adapts priorities to meet deadlines.
- Updates and maintains project status tools including supporting the Master Schedule or other tracking tools.
- Provides accurate and current status updates as requested.
- Works independently within defined Ministry objectives as well as collaboratively as a member of project teams.
- Participates in branch and unit meetings to provide and receive updates regarding ongoing work activities, new work projects, Ministry partnerships, and other branch and Ministry business.
