Overview of Organization
The Sooke Shelter Society is registered non-profit charity that is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. The Society advocates for the Housing First Strategy and provides shelter, mínimal-barrier housing and support services to those in the Sooke region who are low-income and who are hard-to house for a variety of reasons, including lack of affordable housing, poverty, mental illness, substance misuse, racism, other forms of discrimination or abusive family situations. The Society is committed to ensure that people experiencing homelessness have a secure place in the community. The vision is to have
a community where everyone has a safe and affordable place to call home and can readily access the support they need, when needed.
Job Summary
This position has a wide range of skills that handles diverse responsibilities where priorities can change quickly. Surrounded by people who are passionate about homelessness from a rights-based perspective, thriving in a collaborative environment in which diverse stakeholders work toward a common goal.
Strong organization and communication skills and move quickly from broad concepts to practical, actionable steps and clear deliverables.
- Welcomes all clients with kindness and without judgement;
- Maintains a safe, clean, well-ordered environment;
- Performs a variety of non-clinical assessments with clients to determine their primary needs;
- Assists with food preparation and service, and distributes resources and supplies to residents;
- Offer clients emotional support and empathy while maintaining professional boundaries;
- Provides clear relevant information including referrals to other community services;
- Monitors client interactions and ensures housing rules are followed;
- Adheres to the Society’s standards, protocols, and policies;
- Observes, documents, and reports important occurrences on the worksite, including changes to

the building, security matters, and changes in client behaviour;
- Calls 911 in emergencies.Qualifications

**Education**:

- A certificate or diploma in social services;
- First aid: “Emergency First Aid - OFA level 1 Equivalence"
- Naloxone Training;
- Foodsafe;
- Managing Hostile Interactions3 and/or Non-violent Crisis Intervention or similar training;
- Listening and feedback training such as Motivational Interviewing, and/or Non-violent

Communication a significant asset;
- Suicide prevention training a significant asset;
- Mental health first Aid training a significant asset;
- Substance use awareness and safety training a significant asset;
- Trauma informed practice training a significant asset.

Skills and Knowledge:
